Paul Charles Gartner was born on Nov. 24, 1926, the son of Joseph C. Gartner and Marcella B. Mang. He was born in the family home on Mt. Troy Road, Pittsburgh, PA. This house was built by his grandfather, August Gartner.

Paul attended St. Aloysius Grade School on Mt. Troy Road. He and his brothers would walk the 3/4 mile to school every day, carrying a little suitcase that contained all of their lunches. It was his older brother, Joe's job to distribute the food to his brothers at lunch time. The school was located in three classrooms underneath the church and convent. One room had 1st and 2nd grades; one had 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades; and one had 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Paul attend North Catholic High School on Troy Hill, located about 2 miles from the family home.

He graduated from high school in 1944.
Paul has always had a fascination with remote controlled airplanes, a hobby that continues to this day:

Paul married Ann Perez on Feb. 18, 1950. His best men were his brothers, Joseph and Dave.
They first lived in the small house which was located behind the main Gartner house on Mt. Troy Road. This was the "summer kitchen" that was previously remodeled into living quarters for August & Hildegard to use when they were in town from the farm in Ohio. They eventually built their own home on Mt. Troy Road - next door to Paul's older brother, Joe, and two doors up from the original Gartner family home, built by his grandfather, August.
Paul and Ann had two children:
Paul and Ann celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 1975.
Paul worked as a roofer his whole life, and retired in 1988. The following photos were taken at his retirement party on Nov. 26, 1988:
