Johannes Gärtner was the son of Valentin Gärtner and Gertrud (unknown). He was born about 1700 in Weiperz, Hesse, Germany.
On Feb. 15, 1772 (possibly 1773), he married Margaretha Herbert, daughter of Michael Herbert. Johannes and Margaretha had one child:
