George M. Waltz was born in on  March 19, 1838, in Hollidaysburg, PA, the son of George M. Waltz Sr. and Catharine Hines. George was baptized at St. Patrick's Church in Newry, PA  on  May 13, 1838 by Fr. James Bradly.  His godfather was Martin Hart (godmother's name was omitted from the record).

George's parents and older brother and sister had emigrated to the United States sometime between 1830 and 1836.   The family left France from the port of LeHavre, and first settled in Hollidaysburg, Blair County, PA--George was born during this period of time.  By 1841, the family had permanently moved to the farm they bought in Chest Township, Cambria County.

George was a corporal with Company D, 110th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.  (This unit was eventually consolidated with the 115th.)

George married Ellen Stoltz on October 1, 1865 at St. Benedict Church in Carrolltown, PA.  Their witnesses were Jacob Waltz and Elizabeth Noel.  The officiating priest was Father P. Edmone, O.S.B.  Ellen was born in Carrolltown, PA  on May 1, 1840, the daughter of John Stoltz and Barbara Reichtert.

George worked as a carpenter in Carrolltown for many years.  Please see the "Waltz Documents" section of this web site for George's entry in "History of Cambria County" by John E. Gable.

I have been unable to find the family in the 1870 census - even though documents say that they were living in Carrolltown during this time frame.

I found the family listed in the 1880 census Carrolltown, Cambria County, PA (Source:  FHL Film 1255111, National Archives Film T9-1111, Page 506B)

In the 1900 census, only one child was listed with George and Ellen - Augusta.  But, Ellen's mother, Barbara Eastman was also living with them.  Ellen's mother's maiden name was Reichert, but she remarried after Ellen's father died - Edmund Eastman

In the 1910 census, of Cambria County, PA, enumeration district 0101; visit 0114; George M. Waltz is listed as age 78, white, born in PA, head of household; and his wife,  Ellen, age 65, born in PA.  Their daughter , Ida, age 42 was living with them.  There were 3 non-relatives listed in their household - and their relationship to the head of the house was "boarder."

George and Ellen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together on Tuesday, Tuesday, October 5th, 1915.  I found the following newspaper article documenting this fact:

Barnesboro Star, Barnesboro, PA, Thursday, Oct. 7, 1915
GOLDEN WEDDING OF CARROLLTOWN PAIR

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. George Waltz was an event of Tuesday. A high mass at 9 o'clock in St. Benedict's Church was the religious feature of the day's festivities. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Waltz took place Sunday, October 1, 1865. All arrangements for the ceremony had been completed when the Rev. Father Edmund, O.S.B, pastor of St. Benedict's congregation, was called to administer the last rites to one of the parishioners who was at the point of death. The priest remained with the sick person until death released him from his duty in the house of morning.
Hastening will all speed to the other phase of life, namely the happy and waiting couple, the nuptial ceremony was performed at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, instead of 12 o'clock.
The attendants of the bride and bridegroom were Phillip Noel and his sister, Elizabeth, of Munster, near Loretto.
Mr. Waltz was born at Hollidaysburg and his occupation has always Been that of a contractor and builder. At the time of his marriage he was engaged in building the old monastery, in this place.
Mrs. Waltz was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stoltz, and was born in Carrolltown, PA.
Children born to the unions were Miss Ida, at home; William, of Baltimore, Md.; Benjamin, of Hastings; Mrs. Gilbert White and Amandus of Olean, N.Y.; Harry of Carrolltown; Mrs. Martin Schroth, Herman and Mary, deceased.  Mrs. Thomas Letts, of Cresson, is the only living member of Mrs. Waltz's brothers and sisters. Jacob Waltz, of Pasadena, Cal., is a brother of Mr. Waltz. Mrs. Letts, Jacob Waltz, Mrs. Louise Shero of Altoona, and Mrs. Margaret Stoltz, of Carrolltown, are the only persons living who were guests at the wedding a half a century ago.
Mrs. and Mrs. Waltz are aged 78 and 74 years and are enjoying fair health. Both are active and do a moderate amount of work every day.
Mr. Waltz served four years in the Civil War belong to the 115th Pennsylvania Regiment under Capt. Murray of Ebensburg. He took part in the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.  For three months after the close of the war, Mr. Waltz was a patient at the Patterson Hospital, Baltimore, Md.  After his discharge from the hospital he returned to his home and to the waiting girl, Ellen, who became the present Mrs. Waltz

In the 1920 census, 83 year old George is listed with his wife, Ellen (age 76), along with their daughter, Ida and her husband, Henry R. Cole.  There was a servant listed - Amelia Harpak, along with two of her Harpak relatives (William and Anthony).  Additionally, there were 4 more non-relatives that were listed as boarders.

George died on October 12, 1920.  I found the following obit:

Ebensburg Mountaineer-Herald, Ebensburg, PA, Thursday, Oct. 21, 1920
