Edward Modestus Waltz was born on June 26, 1863 in Hastings, PA, the youngest son of John Waltz and Elizabeth Yahner.  He was baptized on July 12, 1863 at St. Benedict Church in Carrolltown.  His godparents were "Antonius Ditrich and Maria Janer."  The officiating priest was Isidore Walter.

Edward lived on the old Waltz homestead in Chest Springs, but his father, John Waltz, died when he was only 5 months old.

Edward married Martha M. Abel, the daughter of Henry Abel and Margaret Glasser in 1889.  Martha was born on June 13, 1870 at St. Boniface, PA.

Edward and Martha had 3 children:

bulletModestus J., born September 18, 1889 in Hastings, PA
bulletHenry Benedict, born March 21, 1892 in Hastings, PA
bulletOtto C., born August 13, 1894 in Hastings, PA

I found the family in the 1900 census, living in Hastings, Cambria County, PA.  Edward was 36 and Martha was 29.  Living with them were their three sons:  Modestus (9); Henry (8) and Otto (5).

In the 1910 census, the family was still living in Hastings, and all five members were listed:  Edward (45); Martha (40); Modestus (19); Henry (18) and Ottoa (15).

I found Edward (57) and Martha (49) in the 1920 census for Hastings.  Their children had moved out, but living with them were two nephews, Raymond Yeager (16); Oscar Skelley (5) and their niece, Elizabeth Yeager (14).

Edward died on December 28, 1928 in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pa.

I foundMartha in the 1930 census, living with her nephew, Raymond Yeager and his wife, Elizabeth in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pa.. Also living with them was Oscar Waltz, whose relationship was listed as "relative."  I think that perhaps this was really Oscar Skelley, who was living with Edward and Martha at the time of the 1920 census.

Martha died on April 7, 1956 in Norristown.
