MR.
J. E. JOHNSON
- The death occured
recently at his home in Quarry Lane Ewingsdale of John
Eric Johnson aged 86 years
- He was born at
Kilgin on the Richmond River . et the age of four years
he moved
- with his parents
Mr. & Mrs. J .T. Johnson to their selection at Binna
Burra. Nis father known as "Coodgeri Jack" was
a Cedar Cutter. As a boy of 12 years Mr. Johnson carried
the mail on horse back from Bangalow to Coorabell,
Federal and Clunes back to Bangalow twice a week.
- He told tales of
aboriginals camped at Springvale Hall on the way to
Lismore to a Corroberee . They came from Tweed and his
father used to talk to them in aboriginal dilect. he also
told of the hardships of the railway men putting the line
through mud, bogging the dreys and horses and the women
trying to cook and to get cloths dry in pouring rain.
- He was one of the
privilidge few to ride teh first train through
Murwillumbah.
- They later moved
to Saddle Road, Brunswick Heads wher he lived for a time
untill 1905, when he selected land at McLeods Shot, which
he cleared and grassed for dairying.
- Mr Johnson married
Linda Beatrice Henry in 1911 at Burringbah. In 1930 he
- leased his farm at
Mcleod Shot and bought a frem at Quarry lane Ewingsdale
where he resided untill his death.
- He was a staunch
member of the Church of England, haveing the destinction
of living in the Parish of Byron Bay for 82 years, during
which time he held offices of Vickars Warden, Church
Wardenand a Synid representative
- The Parish is now
devided into four Parishes Eureka, Bangalow, Mullumbimby
and
- Byron Bay.
- He was held in
high asteam in the district.
- He is survived by
his late Widow, four sons and five daughters. John

Garth (Byron Bay), Charlie (Ewingsdale )Dahpnie (Mrs Cook
Uki Tweed River) Beryl (Ewingsdale) Ina (Mrs Tranter
(Bilambil Tweed River), Nancy (Mrs. A . B. Farraway ,
Byron Bay ) and Myra (Mrs. Black Tin Can Bay Queensland).
- The service was
conducted by Rev R. Date at St Comlumbu's Church of
England
- Ewingsdale . Where
a large attendence of friends and relatives paid their
respect with numerouse floral tributes and a guard of
honour of church members Pallbeares at the church were
grandsons Barry and Ross Johnson, Peter and David Tranter
and Gregory and Robert Farraway and at the grave side
Garth and Charlie Johnson (sons) Henry Cook, Bert
Farraway, Don Black, Rany Tranter ( sons- in law).
