History
& Achievements :
Isaac
Richard Pillidge spent most of his life a secluded man . Very
little information has been found of his life around Morpeth and
Narrowgut . The following has been mentioned many times but has
never really been able to be proven. It has been stated that
Isaac jumped ship so he could remain in the colony. This is now
more than a story and has been proven. It would explain why he
was such a quiet person. The following information was supplied by
Mr . David
Andrews ( England ) dna@newscientist.net
- The Green has been
added for explanation
- "Isaac
Richard Pillage . (b Oreston , a few miles south East of
Plymouth) 1834 "(NOTE the spelling 'age'
not 'idge')
- "Cert No.
6157 "
- "Register
Ticket No. 385396.... recorded on BT122/8/ "(The record number is
where it was found in the Public Records Office )
- "BT122/8 show
registered ONLY MATE issued at Plymouth 21 April
1852"
( This would have been his first issue of the certificate
as a second issue was made 14th day of April .. Year 1853.
This is the certificate shown at the following link . Isaac Richard Pillidge's Mate's
Certificate )
- There are four voyages
shown on BT122/8 two each for 1852 & 1853 showing
Isaac Richard Pillage listed as Only Mate.
- 1852

- " INO"
- 31/10/1853 Bristol ,England
to Melbourne, Australia,
- 24/9/1855 from Melbourne,
Australia to Newcastle, England . Isaac would not have been on
this voyage as he had already jumped ship in Melbourne on
3/7/1854. The "INO" would have stayed from 1853
till 1855 servicing the trade routes around the Coast of
Australia.
- There are no entries for
later years, but there is a note in very faint pencil
which as best as it can be read states the following ,
- ( NOTE -?- means unreadable)
- It reads as follows
- " Run -?- (This word would be ashore as
jumping ship was called running ashore " at Melbourne 3/7/1854 & -?-
broke open the Masters draws and stole -?- See shipping
Master and Isaac Pillage 29/9/55"
- From the above one can
conclude that on the 3/7/1854 Isaac jumped ship ,the
"INO" . He made his way to the
"STANHOPE" and sailed with her on the 22-7-1854 from
Melbourne to Sydney as a member of her crew . The break
in and the ship jump was not reported till 29/9/1855 . By
this time Isaac had disappeared in to the Australian
Colony .Note the change in the spelling of his last name
. From Pillage to Pillidge

Isaac Richard's
Obituary
From the Raymond Terrace Examiner
27th March 1921
One of the earliest
settlers of the Hunter River died at his sons residence at East
Maitland on Thursday morning last week, in the person of Isaac R
Pillidge, father of G.H. Pillidge. The deceased gentleman had
attained the age of 87 years and his illness extended over a
period of merely a few weeks. Death was mainly due to senile
decay. The late Mr. Pillidge was born in Devonshire England, and
like many of his countrymen, felt the call of the sea and
responded, in early life until 25 being spent on board ship.
Arriving in Australia he put in several years in the riverboats
trading from Morpeth t o Sydney. The "Collaroy",
"Coonanbara" and "Tamar" being boats he
piloted up and down the river, for in those days the navigation
of the river successfully, was regarded as a fine art. Leaving
the boats, he took up farming occupations and first settled at
Nelsons Plains, occupying portion of the farm now owned by Thomas
McDermott. There he remained for several years, most of them wet
and unprofitable seasons for farmers in those days. Later he went
to . Narrowgut
. ( a farm
still stands there as of todays date 26/11/1999. It is located on
an Island surrounded by a cut out section of the Hunter River.
The story goes that the property was cut off after the receedence
of flood waters. The river had changed course leaving Narrowgut
an Island. Only one entrance to this property exists ,across a
causway into the property. The main crop grown on the property is
Asparagus ). above
Morpeth, and success rewarded his hard working and diligent
attention to his occupation. About twelve years ago he had
amassed sufficient to retire on and went to Wallsend to live. His
residence continued there up to about ten months ago, when Mrs.
Pillidge died. From then to his death he had resided with his son
at East Maitland. Mr. Pillidge although 87, carried his faculties
up to the last, but was threatened with blindness towards the
last few months of his life. To those who knew him intimately, he
was a valued friend, one of the old school whose word required no
ink to fulfill a contract. His word was his bond and his honesty
as bright as the sunshine. Though of a retiring disposition, he
was highly regarded for his usefulness towards his neighbours and
when he could not assist them he made it a point of his long
life, never to make there path harder. He leaves a family of
sons, daughters, grand and great grandchildren. His sins are R.
Pillidge of Hinton. George Pillidge of East Maitland. Fred
Pillidge of Largs and Charles R Pillidge of Morpeth . His
daughters are, Mrs. R. Sharpe, Mrs. H Bryant and Mrs. C Durrant
of West Maitland, Mrs. J. Cork of Minmi, Mrs. J. Watson of
Morpeth and Miss Pillidge of East Maitland. There are 35
grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren surviving him. The
funeral to Morpeth cemetery on Friday was largely attended,
interment being made in the Church of England section. R.T.E 27th
May 1921

exactly as it apeared in 1921 no changes made, spelling mistakes
have been left in eg" sins" instead of sons.
