History &
Achievements :
- Robert Johnson, born 1724 in Scotland was a
supporter of Bonnie Prince Charles during his attempt to
oust his father,(James V111 of Scotland, James II of
England) from the throne in 1745. Anyone who was a known
supporter of Bonnie Prince Charles was in threat of a
beheading, so Robert decided in 1746 to go to Sweden.
- Charles Johnson, father of Mary Ann Priscilla, was
born in Helsingborg,Sweden around 1799.As a young sailor
aged about 18 he was shipwrecked on a voyage from England
to Australia.Along with 4 others and a Newfoundland dog
they survived on a flimsy raft off the coast of Western
Australia until they were picked up by the " MATILDA"
(which was slightly off course). On board the travelling
with his Regiment to the penal colony of N.S.W was our
soldier ancestor, John
Waddington. On arrival in Australia
Charles joined the crew of a sealer ship, the schooner,
" HUNTER " .On 8th June 1828, the HUNTER was
driven ashore and totally wrecked off Kapiti Island (off
the coast of New Zealand). All hands were saved and
bought back to Sydney in 1829. Charles was listed as a
fireman on the " SOPHIA JANE"a paddle wheel
steamer which sailed regularly from Sydney to Newcastle.
- Charles continued his friendship with John
Waddington and oral history has it that he was also very
good friends with the King family, shipbuilders of
Morpeth (who also later married into the Johnson family)
On September 20th 1833, aged 34 years,he married H . Alice . Waddington . then
aged 18 years at St Phillips Methodist Church in Sydney.
They settled at Narrowgut,
Morpeth on the Hunter River and reared their 14 children.
Alice died on 9th August 1872, aged 57 years at Morpeth.
Charles died 28th June 1875, aged 75 years at Morpeth.
Both are buried at Morpeth Cemetery, with 2 of their
grandchildren, Nancy,aged 6 years & Sarah, aged 10
months.
