John Garfat
Obituary
Died at his residence in the township of Darlington, on the Hampton Circuit,
June 14, 1886. Brother Garfat was born in Seymour, Yorkshire, on the 11th day
of April, 1820. He came to this country in 1832 and settled in the township
of Whitby. when 19 years of age, he was converted to God. In 1884 (must be a
misprint, probably 1844,) he was married to Elizabeth Hazelwood and 36 years
ago they came to the township of Darlington, and united in church membership
at the Zion Church of the late Canadian Methodist Church. He was a man of
sterling piety, and was soon placed as one of the class leaders, which office
he continued to fill until the union, when with his devoted wife he connected
himself with the Mt. Vernon Church, where he laboured hard to make a union a
success and to build up that church in his neighborhood. He was an active
co-labourer with the ministers. His comfortable home was a welcome resting
place for the ministers of Christ. His daily concern and prayer to God was
for the prosperity of the church. We will never forget the importunate prayer
for a revival of god's work in the neighborhood after the church had been
repaired and reopened. Neither shall we forget the ecstasy and delight with
which he participated in the revival which followed, in which the last of his
own children were converted. He was a pillar in the church, a devoted friend
of the ministers, one of the best neighbors, a kind diligent husband and
parent, and was very highly esteemed by all who know him. May God comfort his
lonely companion and two son left behind, and grant that they all may be
united on the ever-green shore.
His remains were followed to the Zion Cemetery by a very large procession. A
sermon was preached by the writer to a deeply affected congregation. May God
comfort the bereaved family and grant that they may all meet in heaven.
