Dirleton Castle In Full View

Here is Dirleton Castle as the quintessential medieval fortress. Notice the motte-and-bailey construction, the drum-like tower in the foreground, the drawbridge to the right, and the banner flying over the battlements. You cannot see the banner, but it is the flag of St. Andrews. I regret that I was unable to present this archetypal old castle with a photogenic blue sky in the background, but this is perhaps more authentic. Despite the fact that Dirleton was built during the "medieval warm period", it was still built in Scotland, and has probably seen more overcast days in its long history than vaulting skies of technicolor azure. We're talking real history here after all, with all its dreariness and grit, not "Ivanhoe".
