Greyfriars Churchyard
This is one of the largest churchyard cemeteries in Edinburgh, with graves and tombs dating as far back as the 16th century. Some of the gravestones have been conspicuously knocked to the ground, and many are almost eerily elaborate, with statuary depicting the stark face of death as well as the likenesses of the persons interred below. Greyfriars also contains an old jail, gated with black wrought iron bars and almost completely open to the elements, that was used to imprison Covenanters during the religious wars of the 17th century.
