A Street In Jedburgh

Here are some houses along a street in Jedburgh that leads up a steep hill to the castle. Notice the stone construction and the individualized chimney pots. In addition to the castle and the abbey, there is the Mary, Queen of Scots House, but we did not visit that. One thing we saw that much impressed us was a monument raised to the World War One dead. What impressed us most was not the monument itself - which was perfectly fine - but its typicality. There is a World War One memorial in every town in this country, no matter how remote or small. We saw one at Broadford, Skye, another at Eilean Donan, not to mention in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Forget your Bannockburn and your Culloden. Scottish troops - Highlanders and Borderers alike - perished in disproportionate numbers in the trenches of France. It is that war, beyond all others, that is most widely commemorated in Scotland.
