I made a pilgrimage to Galloway to visit the homes of my ancestors on my paternal grandmother's side - the Vances, the Maclellans, the Douglases, the Maxwells, the MacCullochs and other families of the region. Wigtown was the home of the Vances - or, as it is spelled in Scotland, the Vanses - whose ancestral estate was at Barnbarroch.
