Eilean Donan Castle At Dusk
No trip to Scotland is complete without a visit to the Highlands, and one of the most picturesque sites thereabouts is Eilean Donan Castle, near the Kyle of Lachalsh. The original castle was erected in the 14th century, but was bombarded by English frigates in 1719, following the defeat of the Old Pretender in the first of the Jacobite Wars. Eilean Donan in its present form did not exist until the beginning of the twentieth century. There is a plaque to the World War One dead at the castle, and the edifice seems to be chiefly associated with the McCraes and the MacKenzies. There are no Grahams, Armstrongs or Elliots embroiled in the history of this place, but it is a part of Scotland nonetheless - at least as it is popularly imagined in calendars, whiskey ads and "Highlander" movies.
