Lanercost Priory
Lanercost Priory stands near Brampton, Cumbria, not far from the ruins of Birdoswald. It was founded by Augustinians in 1166 under the authority of Henry II, and with the patronage of Robert de Vaux, Lord of Gisland. Robert The Bruce raided Lanercost several times during his attacks on Northern England, but otherwise it continued as a priory until Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1536. Lanercost was then acquired by the Dacre family, who became the landlords of the property throughout the Border Reiver era. The Scottish reivers raided Lanercost on many occasions, and the priory never quite escaped the wrath of the north.
