Cattle Grazing At Birdoswald

Sheep and cattle still graze on the rolling hills of the Anglo-Scottish Borders as they have for millennia. We captured the scene below near Birdoswald. It struck us as stunningly bucolic - even a little anachronistic, like something out of a Constable painting. In fact, Birdoswald was a farm until well into the twentieth century. As such it was vulnerable to attack from the reivers, and the Elliots of Liddesdale themselves raided Birdoswald on at least two occasions.
