Jedburgh Castle

Jedburgh Castle was constructed by David I in the 12th century, and was a frequent residence of later Scottish kings. It was held by English forces as well as by Scots during the Border Wars, until the English were finally ousted in 1409 and the castle was demolished to preclude its occupation by future invaders. A prison was built on the foundation of the old castle in the early 19th century, at which point "Jedburgh Castle" became "Jedburgh Gaol". It is important to remember that Jedburgh has long served as a center of justice for The Borders, and it was often from here that "Jeddart justice" - in other words, summary execution - was meted out to reivers unfortunate enough to be caught.
