Ruins Of Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey was founded by David I in 1138 as a Augustinian priory. This and other Scottish abbeys played a crucial role in developing the wool trade, which has been a mainstay of the economy of The Borders ever since. Unfortunately, the abbey was all but destroyed by the Earl of Hertford in 1545, during the "Rough Wooing" - Henry VIII's campaign to force the Scots to give Mary Stewart in marriage to his infant son, Prince Edward.
