According to the records that survive, James Gallagher was eking out a living selling organs, music boxes, and mottoes when he discovered a market among his neighbors for the herbal remedies he concocted from old recipes. Using plants he grew on his own land oe gathered from the wild, he developed a number of potions, notably "Gallagher's Kidnney Remedy and blood purifier," also described as a "system builder", that apparently worked miracles for the suffers who tried it, whether it was for gallstones, kidney stones, anemia or dropsy. His Indian Lung Remedy was also a blood builder, good for colds, flu, lung trouble or asthma. Golden Drops could be used inside or out, for lunbago, boils, burns, corns, etc. or as a poultice instead of mustard plaster for bronchtis or pneumonia. The demand grew and soon Gallagher's Remedies could be purchased in general stores thoughout east Peterborough. Gradually his fame spred further and many American customers sent regularly for mail orders of their favorite treatments.
