Woodworth DNA Project

The Woodworth DNA Project began in December 2005 when a group of Walter Woodworth descendants
decided they wanted to prove their lineage by DNA testing.  In February of 2006 the first of the results
came back and they are presented here with a brief explanation. All Woodworths worldwide are welcome to
participate regardless of their relationship to Walter.

A Brief Explanation of What the Chart is Composed of:

At the top of the allele chart from left to right are 37 DYS numbers.  DYS stands for DNA Y-chromosome
Segment.  The DYS number is just a name assigned to each marker by scientists.  These 37 markers were picked
by Family Tree DNA as ones that are most useful for genealogy purposes.  The number in red signifies that that
particular marker is a fast moving marker, meaning it mutates more frequently than the other
markers.  This is useful for genealogy purposes as it helps place members in particular branches of their
family tree.  Below the DYS numbers are the actual participant results, or alleles.  These numbers mean little to us
by themselves, but by comparing them to other participants we can tell if and how closely
they are related to each other.

A Brief Explanation of the Results:

Walter Woodworth had four sons - Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, and Isaac.  The DNA results below
are separated into these four lines.  Results in black are markers that are common to all Walter
descendants, those in blue are markers that have shown a mutation in one or more participants, with the actual
mutation shown in purple.  So far most participants are remarkably similar genetically, while a few participants are
obviously not genetically related to Walter.  Below each chart is the lineage for each participant.  I have also
included Woodworth matches from other testing companies.  Hopefully after we have tested a good sampling of
Woodworth descendants any unknown Woodworth will be able to compare their results to these 4 groups
and know if and how they are descended from Walter. Several of our participants, representing three separate
lines from Walter, have also tested to 67 markers. So far all participants have tested identically in these 38-67 markers
with one exception.   I will not be adding these results to this website due to space limitations,
but the results can be viewed at our public website.  I will also be including results for British Woodworths and
for other Woodworth lines (unknowns, variant spellings, etc.) if they show a relationship to Walter.  Other
Woodworth lines not related to Walter can also be found at the Woodworth Surname Project FTDNA webpage
under "Y Results".

IMPORTANT!  If you are from the Walter-Benjamin-Benjamin line you may want to be tested to
prove your descendancy from Walter as it is unclear at which generation the genetic event
took place.

Woodward/Woodard or other variant lines

None tested at this time.

There is currently a Woodward DNA project at Family Tree DNA.  They have many participants,
including lines from England, New England, N. & S. Carolina, and Tennessee/Virginia. The Colonial New England
lines are Richard Woodward of Lancaster, England and Watertown, Mass; and Nathanial Woodward of Northampton,
England and Boston, Mass.  After comparing these results to our Woodworth participant's results, none of these
Woodward lines are genetically related to Walter Woodworth.
