COLEMANs in Georgia & Allied Families

Jack Murphy COLEMAN

Jack Murphy COLEMAN, the son of William Carl COLEMAN and Beulah Francis MURPHY, was born 28 March 1926 in Kendrick, Marion County, FL. Beulah died when Jack was just 4 years old, and he and his brother, William, were moved to his father's childhood home of Douglas, Coffee County, GA, so that his grandparents, Holcombe & Augusta KEEN COLEMAN could help his father take care of the children. In 1932, William Carl remarried, to Eva Mae HAWKINS HARRISON, and the family moved back to Ocala, Marion County, FL. It is not known if Augusta made this move, and at this point, the date of her death is unknown. Holcombe did make the move with William Carl and his family; he passed away sometime before 1950, and, according to William Carl's step-daughter, Ledgie POLSON, Holcombe was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Marion Co, FL.

Jack entered military service in 1943, joining the US Navy. Military service became his career, to which he gave over 20 years of his life. He eventually retired in Philadelphia, PA as a Chief Petty Officer. His career with the Navy took him to many places, and he excelled in his service.

Sophie Mary JANDACKA, the daughter of Slovakian and Polish immigrants, John JANDACKA and Helen SOPKO, was born September 9, 1920, in Bronx, NY. In the late 20's, her father, with a group of other Slovak men, went to Hernando County, FL, bought land there, and began the Hernando Plantation Corporation. The area they settled in FL became known as Masaryktown, named after Czech President Masaryk. A few years after John went to FL, his family joined him there, and the JANDACKAs lived in Masaryktown for a few years, eventually returning to Bronx, NY, where Sophie eventually grew to a young adult.

In the late 1940's, Jack was stationed in San Diego, CA, and while there, he met Sophie, who had moved to CA with a girlfriend and was living at the YWCA. After courting her for more than a year, he finally convinced her to marry him. On December 31, 1949, in Yuma, AZ, before a justice of the peace, Sophie became Mrs. Jack Murphy COLEMAN.
