The Mayfield Line
The ancestors of Emily Mayfield, wife of Lycurgus Carl Brown, have been traced back to Robert Mayfield, who is believed to have immigrated from England to America before 1652. The Mayfields were brave pioneers and land owners, who fought Indians and wars. They had large families who migrated across the United States.
Williamson Irvin Mayfield
Emily Mayfield Brown was born December 2, 1847 in Spencer, Owen Co., Indiana. Her parents were Williamson Irvin Mayfield, born May 18, 1825 in Owen County, Indiana, and Susan Mary Cline, born August 8, 1826 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. They were married October 26, 1843 in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana, and immigrated to Montague County, Texas about 1859. They were among the first settlers to arrive after the formation of Montague County in 1857.
Emily had 7 younger siblings, whose birth dates and places indicate the path and time they traveled from Indiana to Texas. George Mayfield, born March 10, 1851 in Owen Co., IN; Nancy, born December 4, 1854, born in Mills Co., IA; Surrildia, born December 7, 1856, and Martha, born April 9, 1959, in Sullivan Co., MO. The three youngest children were all born in Montague Co., TX: John, born October 18, 1861; Ellen, born July 12, 1866; and Peter, born February 22, 1870.
Williamson Irvin Mayfield died September 15, 1875, and Susan died June 3, 1877. They are buried in the Mayfield Cemetery in Montague Co., TX.
George Mayfield married Louise LaForce in 1873 in Montague Co., and died November 24, 1883; he is also buried in Mayfield Cemetery. George and Louise had three children: Geogan, born 1874; William C., born 1876; and Lou Alice, born 1878.
Nancy Mayfield married Ebenezer B. Dixon in Montague Co. on April 7, 1872, and died November 10, 1884; she is buried in the Mayfield Cemetery. They had four children, all born in Montague County: Varrilia Mayfield, born January 2, 1874, married Jim Haney, and died 1916; Emogene Mayfield, born November 30, 1875, married Allen Haddox, and died 1974; Anna D. Mayfield, born September 21, 1878, married J. Liscomb Smith, and died December 21, 1970; and Williamson Henry Mayfield, born November 19, 1880, married Vera (last name unknown).
Surrildia Mayfield married John Robert McMurtry in Montague Co. on October 13, 1881, and died April 20, 1955 in Lindsay, Garvin Co., OK. They had the following five children: Rose Ella McMurtry, born August 12, 1882 in Montague Co., TX, married Marion S. Stridham, died June 19, 1971 in OK; Maud McMurtry, born February 17, 1888 in Petersburg, IT (OK), married Thomas L. Sinclair December 29, 1919 in Grady Co., OK, and died May 23, 1986 in OK; Lewis Irvin McMurtry, born 1892 in OK, died February 15, 1905 in OK; Mary McMurtry, born December 6, 1898 in Montague Co., TX, died May 1921 in OK; and Annette McMurtry, born May 31, 1903 in OK, married Nolan Jackson Dellis November 5, 1931, and died March 13, 1943 in Muleshoe, Bailey Co., TX.
Martha Mayfield married Oliver Cleveland "Bud" Elliott in Montague Co., TX on May 6, 1877, and died March 21, 1949 in Pampa, Gray Co., TX. They had the following six children: John Briant Elliott, born January 30, 1878 and died August 19, 1880 in Montague Co., TX; Ora Cecil Elliott, born November 24, 1879, married Bable Pinkney "Pink" Seitz June 25, 1897 in Montague Co., TX, and died February 13, 1957 in Miami, Roberts Co., TX; Emily Haulford "Hollie" Elliott, born October 26, 1881 and married Laban Jethero Seitz September 3, 1899 in Montague Co., TX, and died July 30, 1965 in Pampa, Gray Co., TX; William Irvin Elliott was born May 9, 1883 and died August 5, 1885 in Montague Co., TX; Oliver Walker Elliott, born December 1, 1897, and married Betty Cole December 24, 1919 in TX, and died January 3, 1968 in Las Vegas, San Miguel Co., NM; and Mattie Mayfield Elliott, born January 24, 1901 in Mobeetie, Wheeler Co., TX, married Emmett Aberco Gatlin November 6, 1921 in Miami, Roberts Co., TX.
John Mayfield married Minnie Wickliff on November 28, 1888 in Montague Co., TX, and died February 21, 1893; he is buried in the Illinois Bend Cemetery in Montague Co. They had two children: Flora Mayfield, born October 28, 1889, married James Claudis Brown March 10, 1910 in Montague Co., TX, and died January 17, 1919 in Mobeetie, Wheeler Co., TX; John William Mayfield was born October 25, 1892 in Montague Co., and died December 30, 1937 in Mobeetie, Wheeler Co., TX.
Ellen Mayfield married John Clinton McCain January 20, 1886 in Montague Co., TX, and died January 6, 1947 in Edmond, Oklahoma Co, OK. They had ten children: Mattie Lou McCain, born February 7, 1887 in Montague Co., TX, married Harry Wright, and died May 25, 1981 in Edmond, Oklahoma Co., OK. Willie Carl McCain, born June 27, 1888 in Montague Co., TX, married Inez Tannerhill, and died February 26, 1976 in El Reno, Canadian Co., OK.
