Generation No. 1

George Alton Brown

The oldest ancestor we have been able to locate to date in our Brown family line is GEORGE ALTON BROWN.

George Alton Brown was born in Virginia in 1810; his parents and  siblings, if any, are unknown.   George became one of the first settlers of Texas at age 26.  He immigrated to Red River County, Texas, on December 19, 1836, prior to the time Texas became a Republic in 1837.  George received Conditional Certificate No. 151, from the Republic of Texas, County of Red River, on August 3, 1838 for 640 acres of land.  This certificate was replaced by an unconditional certificate, No. 25, on July 15, 1841.  George sold this land in 1844.  [Texas General Land Office records, File #RED-2-152]

About 1839, George married Mary "Polly" McClinton, daughter of John McClinton and Eleanor Lunetta Baird of Abbeville County, South Carolina.  Mary was born in SC about 1820.  Titus County, Texas was form in 1845 from Red River County, Texas.   According to the 1850 Census for Titus County, Texas, the couple had the following children:

Roxana

b. July 8, 1840

Solon

b. ca 1842 in TX

Lycurgus Carl

b. June 26, 1844 in Titus Co., TX

Virginia

b. ca 1845 in TX

Josephine

b. ca 1848 in TX

We lose track of George after the1850 census until the1880 census, when he is listed in the home of his son, Lycurgus C. Brown, in Montague County, Texas.  His wife, Mary is reported to have died in 1851, followed by Solon, and then by Josephine in 1857.   Daughter, Roxana, was married in Sevier County, Arkansas on January 31, 1856 to Henry Jackson.    They had one son, Henry Jackson, Jr., born ca 1859, as reflected by the 1860 Census Records for Hopkins County, Texas.

On May 5, 1858, the Court of Probate of Sevier County, Arkansas, entered an order on pages 26-27 of its records, appointing Mary's brother, Rev. Robert Harvey McClinton, guardian of minors, Lycurgus and Virginia Brown. In 1860, Lycurgus and Virginia were living in Hopkins County, Texas, with Roxana and Henry Jackson.

Lycurgus enlisted in the Texas Calvary on June 1, 1862 to fight in the Civil War.  Roxana married for the second time on November 9, 1862, in Hopkins County, Texas, to Alexander Bradley Punfort ("ABP" or "Bradley") Mayfield.  [No information has been found to indicate what happened to Henry Jackson, Sr. and Jr.]

Virginia married John Jackson on May 31, 1863 in Hopkins County, Texas.

Lycurgus was discharged from service in May 1865 and moved to Montague County, Texas, along with Roxana and family (and possibly Virginia and John Jackson).  In 1869, both Lycurgus and ABP Mayfield registered to vote, indicating they had been in Montague County for 4 years.

On September 15, 1867, Lycurgus married Emily Mayfield, daughter of Williamson Irvin Mayfield and Susan Mary (Cline) Mayfield in Montague County, Texas.  [Emily Mayfield was a third cousin, twice removed, of ABP Mayfield.]

George died February 11, 1884 and is buried in the Mayfield Cemetery in Montague County, Texas.  His tombstone (which is now almost unreadable) showed:  "Dr. G.A. Brown, Born 1810, Died February 11, 1884"   A new marker was erected by the Brown Family Association on his grave in August 2000.  According to family history, George Alton Brown was a veternarian.
