A sad incident occurred at Rotomana, West Coast, when the 15 year old son of Mr and Mrs W Vallance was thrown from a horse and found unconcious with a fractured skull and other injuries, which proved fatal at the Grey River Hospital the following night. No other details.

The New Zealander, 3rd December 1851, News.
On Monday, a man named Thomas Hill was charged, by Mrs Vercoe, a Tavern Keeper in Fort Street, Auckland, with having given her a number of counterfeit sixpences, in payment for a bottle of rum that she sold to him on Sunday last. He was traced to his lodging, by a Policeman, on the same evening, and a large number of similar sixpences to those he had given for the rum were found in his pocket; and afterward, the same officer proceeded on board a small vessel, in which Hill had came down the river, and found a lump of pewter, a spoon, and a mould in his chest. These were produced in Court. The prisoner made no defense, and was remanded. a person named John Duncan, who had also been drinking at Vercoe's on Sunday, was charged with having two of these base coins in his possession. He was also remanded.

An old and highly respected settler of Manaia, South Taranaki, passed away on August 30th, in the person of Mr William Vine, at the age of 79 years. Deceased at one time was proprietor of the Opanake - Hawera coach. No other details.

Private Alfred Eric Waller, died of bronchitis in France, is the second son of Mrs Annie Waller, nurse, of Te Kuiti. He left NZ with the 8th Reinforcements. He was wounded in the battle of the Somme and after recovery was engaged in the battle of 12 October last. He is the second son of Mrs Waller who has made the supreme sacrifice.

Private Nolan Dyson Wastney, killed in action on 9th April, 1917, was the eldest son of the late Mr Edward Wastney, for some time connected with the National Bank of New Zealand. Pte Wastney, whose mother resides at Onerahi, was only 22 years of age when he met his death as a member of the Australian Expeditionary Force.

Captain William Watson, who has returned on Transport No.149, is a son of Mr William Watson, a well known Wellington business man and a director of the Bank of NZ. Prior to enlisting in 1915 he was engaged in farming at Rangiriri. He served on the Gallipoli Peninsula and in France, and is married to a daughter of Mrs Robert Browning of Arney Road, Remuera. He wears the Military Cross.

Private Walter McKinley, reported to have died of wounds on the 25th March, was the fifth son of Mr J Watson, Drummer Street, Auckland, and one of four brothers serving in the Expeditionary Force. He served through the greater part of the Gallipoli campaign, went to France with the NZ Division and served continuously with the Auckland Battalion up to the time of his death. He was wounded in Gallipoli and again at the battle of the Somme.

Lieut F W Watson, who has been killed, was a son of Mr F H Watson of Bulls and was 26 years of age. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys High School and the Canterbury College, where he had a fine scholastic career. He was also a splendid athlete. Upon leaving school he entered the Lands & Survey Dept and was one of the most promising surveyors and draughtsmen in the Government service. He was transferred to Auckland some years ago and spent some time in North Auckland district. When war was declared he joined an Auckland machine-gun section as private. He saw much service on Gallipoli, being awarded the DCM for his fine work during the Suvla Bay advance.

Jane Watt, 85 years of age, who was standing by the fire warming herself, when her clothes caught fire. A Neighbor saw her standing in the doorway with her clothes blazing, and secured a piece of carpet and wrapped it around her. He managed to extinguish the flames, but the unfortunate women, was so severely burnt that she succumbed to her injuries. A formal verdict was returned.

Lieut Colonel John Whiteman, a New Zealander serving with the Imperial Forces, - whose name, owing to an error in transmission, was given in a cable message as Whiting - received wounds in the battle of Arras, from which he died within 24 hours. He was in command of a Naval Brigade with the temporary rank of major general. He was 43 years of age and was educated at Wanganui College. He served in the South African War, receiving two medals and seven clasps, also being mentioned in despatches. His regiment was the third to land in France in the present war and he was the only officer not wounded or killed in the retreat from Mons.

Acting Sergeant Major Charles Te Kiwi Wilkinson, whose death in action was reported last week, was born at Otorohanga in 1893 and was a son of the late Mr G T Wilkinson, Judge of the Native Land Court. He received his education at the Otorohanga school and later at King Edward's College, Auckland. He was a keen athlete and took an interest in all sport. He joined an early reinforcement as a private, saw service on Gallipoli and was present at the evacuation. Then he was drafted to France. On 20th April he received wounds which resulted in his death. Friends please accept this intimation.

An old and respected resident of the district of Marlborough, in the person of Mr John Treagrove Williams, died recently at the age of 75 years. The late Mr Williamsd was born at Bowden, Adelaide and came to New Zealand in the ship "Dunedin" when he was 8 years old. He took up residence in Marlborough in 1866 and at the time of his death was a member of Court Clarendon, A.O.F. The late Mr Williams is survived by a widow, 4 sons and 5 daughters. No other details.

Major W G Wray, M.C. of Wellington, who has returned on Transport No.149, was officer commanding the troops during the voyage. He left NZ in command of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, 6th Reinforcement. He took part in operations on Gallipoli Peninsula and in France. He was wounded at Messines and the Somme. With the exception of a few months spent in command of the Otago Reserve Battalion at Sling Camp, he has been almost continuously in the firing line.

On the 8th of August 1915 at Kaukapakapa, John Edward Simon, youngest son of the late Dr Young of the Honourable East India Co's service, aged 67 years. No other details.

Lieutenant E H Young, wounded, son of Mrs W S Young, Otakeho, Taranaki. Before he enlisted he was employed by Hesketh & Richmond, solicitors, Auckland. He has served with the NZ forces since they landed in France and went through the Somme battle unscathed. At the end of last April, then L/Cpl Young was sent to England and after five weeks study, passed and was granted a commission. He went back to Divisional Base on 12 July. Sergeant Major O M Young, who died of wounds at Flers last October and Sergeant Vivian Young, who is now probably in France, left with later reinforcements. A J and J E Young have volunteered for service.
