A very old resident of Australasia and Wanganui he was one of the foremost workers in the early days of the Labour movement, passed away on Sunday in the person of Mr Charles Vine. The deceased who was 87 years of age, came to Victoria from England when quite young. He was one of the small committee responsible for starting the eight hours day movement in Australia and bringing it to a successful issue. For some years past he has lived in retirement with his brother, Mr Edward Vine.

The death occurred on Sunday morning at Lower Hutt of Mr J B Virtue, was a second son of the late Mr P.W Virtue, and a partner in the firmof Messrs Virtue and Co, Victoria Street. The late Mr Virtue was single man and was born in Maryborough, Victoria. He came over to Hokitika as a boy, and has resided in Wellington for about 27 years. Deceased was in partnership with his brother with his brother Mr R Virtue, and other brothers are Mr W.C Virtue, Manager of BNZ Akaroa, Mr P V Virtue of the Roller Flour Mills, Auckland, and Mr P W Virtue, Town Clerk of Timaru.
