Joseph POU, 28 years of age for rescuing 10 persons from drowning at Otama, Kuaotunu, on December 26th 1913. A gold medal. In this case, a boat containing several persons capsized about 2 chains from the beach, throwing the occupants into very deep water. All of them would certainly have been drowned as they could not swim, had it not been for the prompt action of Pou. He rescued the whole party, but had some difficulty in rescuing 2 ladies, as their feet had become entangled in the ropes of the boat. After some exertion he succeeded in doing so. No other details.
