As the result of being knocked down by a motor car, on the main South Road, near Ashburton, on Friday night, Frank Major, aged 46, of Timaru, was admitted to the Ashburton Hospital in a critical condition and died on Saturday morning. The driver of the car, Alfred William Pellow, a salesman, aged 32, who, it is alleged, did not stop after the accident, was arrested in Christchurch.

John Maxwell was born at Armagh, Ireland on the 25th June 1835. Arrived in New Zealand in 1860, with the 40th Regiment, in the ship "City of Hobart" from Melbourne, he served in the Taranaki Campaign, and later in Auckland, and was discharged in 1866 and came to Tauranga the same year. He was the founder and Proprietor of the "Belfast Bakery" He died on 15th March 1904, aged 68 years. No other details.

The death has occurred, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs R Peebles, Taneatua, of Mr Charles Merriman, aged 92. Well known throughout the Bay of Plenty, Mr Merriman was born in Gloucestershire, came to New Zealand in 1877, in the ship Otaki. For two and a half years after his arrival, Mr Merriman was Manager on Slipper Island and experienced many hardships. After a period at Tauranga he went to Opotiki and farmed until going to Taneatua about 20 years ago. Mr Merriman is survived by 5 sons and 3 daughters, There are 48 Grandchildren, 30 Great Grandchildren and 7 Great Great Grandchildren.

Settlers of Opotiki
Like many other early Opotiki settlers, Mr David Mills, was born in Ireland and came to Opotiki in 1866 on the sailing ship "Merry Shepherd" and fought in the Maori Wars. After his discharge from the forces he farmed at Otara for 50 years, and finally retired to live in Devonport. Mr Mills who was married twice had a family of 10 children.

Mr and Mrs Moody arrived in Auckland from Great Britain in 1860 after a voyage of 8 and a half months in the sailing ship "Queen of Beauty". After their arrival in Opotiki Mr Moody worked as a Builder, one of his many jobs was to erect the original portion of the primary school, and also many of the Maori schools. The death has occurred at Otane, of Mrs Harriett Maria Mulinder, aged 99 years. Mrs Mulinder left England in 1859, and after arriving in Wellington, came to Hawkes Bay, in her early 20s, she married Mr Windor in Napier, and then went with her husband to Waipawa. Nine years later her husband died. After marrying Mr George Mulinder, made her home at Patangata. Her second husband died 40 years ago, and she had since resided most of the time at Otane. She is survived by 6 of a family of 10.
