He Received his first lessons in his art from Mr Walter Ferguson, then art master at Edinburgh High School after which he attended drawing classes at the Royal Institute. His first picture he sent to the Royal Scottish Academy, and it was amediately hung on the line. His best works have been hung with such great artists as Leighton, Tadema, and Noel Paton. He came to New Zealand in the latter end of 1883, and resided in Dunedin ever since.
