LEITH.
John Leith was born in Scotland in 1822, he went to sea in his youth and obtained his Masters Certificate at the age of 24 years. He went to Victoria during the Gold Rush, and landed in Auckland in 1853. He took up Flax Milling in the Nelson Province, but this was not successful, he settled in Canterbury at a place which was later called "Leithfield" There he erected a Flour Mill and opened a Hotel. About 1869, Captain Leith removed to the Thames Goldfield and took part in Mining, and afterwards went to sea again, first in the Thames boats, and then as Chief Officer of the Southern Cross Missionary Schooner. Subsequently he commanded several boats in succession. About 1880 he entered the Lighthouse Service and went to London in 1892, where he resided until his death in 1912. No other details.
