JOHNSTONE.
Obituary, Waikato Times, August 18th 1930.
A pioneer of the early days passed away on Saturday, when the death occured at Wardville, of Mr .H. Johnstone, who had farmed in the Matamata district for nearly 30 years. The late Mr. Johnstone was born in 1844 and was a native of Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Mr. Johnstone landed in New Zealand from the ship "Resolute 1", when he was 20 years old, at the port of Dunedin, and commenced shepherding in the Mackenzie country. Following this he was engaged in farming for many years, mostly cropping, until he went to the North Island. For 14 years he was employed on Mr. T.H. Lowry's Okawa Station, and following this he went to the Morere Springs, near Wairoa, which he opened up, building a boarding house there, which was shortly afterwards converted into a hotel. After a stay of five years at the springs, Mr. Johnstone came to the Waikato district, some 30 years ago, and later took up blocks of land at Waharoa and Wardville. Mr. Johnstone farmed several properties around Matamata, and had been on his present farm at Wardville about six years. Of a quiet disposition, Mr. Johnstone was a member of the Presbyterian faith, and had, in earlier years, served on the Ohaupo and Waharoa School Committees.
