HALL. Weekly News, 27th May 1915. Obituary. Mr John William Hall, a very old and respected resident of Thames, died on Monday, aged 85 years. He was a Chemist and a native of Leicestershire. Came to New Zealand on the ship "Egmont" in 1857. With his cousin, Mr Bassett, he made a tour of the North by cutter inspecting land. Purchased a farm at Mangere in partnership with the late Col Lyon. He served with the militia for home defence during the Maori Wars and was at Thames at the opening of the goldfields where he went into business as a chemist, having served his apprenticeship in London. He was in partnership with Mr Thomas Spencer. His native tree plantation near Thames is well known to botanists and he has distributed native tree seeds all over the world. He was a veritable encyclopedia on all matters relating to New Zealand plants and ferns.

The body of William Hallam, aged 13 years, who was drowned in the Hakanoa Lake at Huntly on August 21st, was recovered yesterday morning by Mr R Attill, in company with Master Allan McLeod. Hallam was in a canoe on the lake with two other schoolboys, Laurence Kay and Edward Frost, when the canoe was swamped.

Obituary, Weekly News, 11th November 1915. An old and respected resident of Thames, died on Tuesday last week in the person of Mrs Hanlen, wife of Mr Alexander Hanlen. Mrs Hanlen, who was 70 yrs of age, had been well and active until quite recently. Both Mr and Mrs Hanlen are descendants of soldiers. Mrs Hanlen was the daughter of the late Mr J H Syms of the 2nd Queen Bays, Dragoon Guards. Mr and Mrs Hanlen were married at Saint Paul's Church at Auckland, in July 1864. They arrived at Thames in 1867 and resided there ever since. The deceased lady leaves a husband, seven sons and daughters and a large number of grandchildren.

Deceased was born at Burhampuir, India, in 1830. She arrived in Auckland in 1845 with her parents, in the ship "Mary Ann" . They were for sometime billeted with other Military Pensioners at Onehunga, and afterwards removed to Otahuhu, she was married to Colour Sergeant Haslam, one of the old 58th Regiment, and who afterwards , as a Sergeant Major, was Drill Instructer at the Auckland Militia, also the volunteers and at the Auckland Grammer School for a number of years. Mrs Haslam is survived by, 4 daughters, 2 sons and a number of grandchildren.

HATHAWAY. Report of Death. Herald, 2nd June 1922. A man named R W Hathaway, aged 40 years, a Bootmaker by occupation, was drowned in the Waipa River at Otorohanga. The deceased walked along a dark road beside the unprotected bank of the river. He fell over a high bank and struck his head on the rocks below. He was rendered unconsious and was drowned. The body was found this morning. The deceased saw servic both in the Boer War and the late War. He attained the rank of Sergeant Major Instructor. On his retirement he acted as Physical Instructor to the local Gymnasium. He leaves a wife and 3 children. He resided for some years in Hamilton prior to coming to Otorohanga. No other details.

HODSON. 15th Feb 1950. Seeking Armed Man After Killing.
Police are searching the Whakatane district for a man believed to be armed and carrying a large supply of ammunition, following the discovery of the body of a man partly buried by sand and scrub. The man found was Frederick Stanley Hodson, aged 59, a bacteriologist. His body was at the roadside at Onepu, between Lake Rotoma and the village of Edgecumbe. He had been shot. Hodson, who was employed by the Rangitalki Dairy Company at Edgecumbe, was married with no children. He had been missing since Monday morning.
