DUDER Edith Marianne.
A link with the sailing -ship days of the last century has been severed by the death of Mrs Edith Marianne Duder of Devonport, widow of the late Captain Albert Duder, formerly Harbour Master of Auckland.
Mrs Duder who was in her 80th year, was born in London, and as a child was taken to India, where her father was employed as a Civil Engineer. After his death her mother married a Sea Captain by the name of Grant, who took his step-daughter for a voyage around the world in the ship "Himalaya', a fine vessel of nearly 2000 tons. They called at many ports and spent sometime in NZ waters. Two years later when her education had been completed, she sailed from England to Wellington with him in a 200 ton Schooner "Jasper".
Mrs Duder was married in Wellington and made a number of voyages with her husband in vessels which he commanded in the Intercolonial Trade.
In 1894 Captain Duder left the sea to become deputy Harbour master in Auckland, and in the following year was appointed Harbour-master, a position he held until his retirement in 1913.. Mrs Duder went to England, in spite of her advanced years to see her son, Mr Nelson Duder, who was living there. She is survived by 2 sons and a daughter. There are 8 grandchildren.<
