COLLINS.
On 24th August 1936, there passed away at a Private Hospital in Morrinsville, Mr W J Collins, a very loyal Methodist and faithful servant of Jesus Christ. He was a pioneer settler in the Tahuna district, having come from the mines at Coromandel in 1903. Of sturdy pioneering stock, not afraid of hard work,he carved out a farm and reared his family of nine children. WIth one or two others he began preparations for the erection of a church at Tahuna, and he was secretary of the Tahuna trust from its inception. His faithful wife pre-deceased him by five years, and for long the rigiours of his early mining career impaired his own health, and miners' phthisis was at last responsible for his death. He was a kindly, loveable man, a generous supporter of all our enterprises, and he served the Lord fervently. Three of the younger members of his family remain at the old homestead and the others are married and settled in the Tahuna district. Passing into the other world had no fears for him, and as long as he could speak he repeated to himself the comforting words of scripture. Almost the whole of Tahuna attended the service in the church and the long cortege of cars followed the twelve miles to the cemetery at Morrinsville. A pathetic incident at the graveside was the act of a Maori woman who stood awhile while others dispersed and a cry broke from her lips as she uttered a touching lament in her own tongue. The departed farmer had been kind to her people in the early days and had sustained and helped them.
