BOCKETT.
Charles F BOCKETT was a Englishman of education and substance who settled in Opotiki as a Solicitor about 1870. Early in 1880 he started a Flour Mill by the Mill Stream at Waioeka, which was a boon to Opotiki farmers, who were then growing wheat. In the 1890s his nephews, Charles and Percy, came to live with him. Charles was a Captain in the Boer War, and on his return he married Miss Dolly Bridger, the only daughter of Mr Bridger who owned the business which is now Farmers Trading Co. He died in 1912 while farming at Otara East, but Percy, who married Clara Savage, lived until 1971 when he died at the age of 92. Twin sons of Charles and Dolly, Arthur and Herbert, reached high positions in the Civil Service, which they joined in 1921. Arthur who received a O.B.E. became General Manager of the Waterfront Control Commission, while Herbert also received a O.B.E. for his services of Secretary of Labour. The twins attended Dilworth School and later Seddon Memorial College. Their Grandmother Bockett was the last resident of the historic Te Awamutu Mission House.

The death of Mr Walter Henry BROOKS a resident of the Veterans' occurred last week at Auckland Hospital. Mr Brooks who was born in the East Indies in 1837, came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship 'Ajax" in 1847. He served in the Maori war and fought in engagements in the Taranaki district. Mrs Brooks died some years ago.
