Mrs Charles Pratt Baker, an old Auckland identity, died at Fleet, Hampshire, England, last April, aged 90 years. She arrived in NZ from Oxford in the 'sixties'. Taught in Maori schools in the Bay of Islands until war broke out when she had to flee for her life with her baby, the Maoris having set fire to her home. She resided at Parnell and 18 years ago Mrs Baker and her daughter - now Mrs Lankester - went to Sydney where they resided until two years ago when they went to England. Mr Andrew Baxter of Oxford, who died suddenly, but not unexpectedly, on October 8th, was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland 1844, and the whole of his life was spent in rural pursuits. Towards the end of 1863, he arrived in Lyttelton in the ship "David G Fleming" and spent the first 10 years of his colonial life, in sawmilling and bush work on Banks Peninsula. In 1873 he removed to Oxford, and for some years in conjunction with his brother was engaged in Sawmilling. From 1877 to 1894 the brothers also worked a threshing mill. He farmed a propery in East Oxford until about 6 years ago, when he retired. For 3 years he occupied a seat on the school committee, and for 10 years on the Oxford Road Board. He was also a member and patron of the Oxford A and P Association. two years ago Mr and Mrs Baxter celebrated their Golden Wedding.

Captain John Bishop - Mrs Bishop of Francis Street, Grey Lynn, has received the following cablegram from Captain Magnay at Sling Camp, England, of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, in reference to her husband Captain John Bishop: "Hospital reports husband's condition fairly good, outlook hopeful". This is the only intimation that her husband is in hospital that Mrs Bishop has received. The Defence Department states that it has had no official intimation that Captain Bishop is sick or wounded. Before going to the front he was a Staff Officer attached to the headquarters of the Wellington military district at Palmerston North.

Private John Henry Allen Bollard, previously reported missing, has been killed in action in France on 25 September 1916. He volunteered for active service in May 1915 when he joined the Canterbury Battalion. After serving on Gallipoli he was invalided to England from where he later rejoined his regiment and died in the battle of the Somme. He was the elder son of William Allen Bollard of Dunedin and grandson of the late Mr John Bollard, MP and the late Henry Sankey. He was brought up by his aunt, Miss Bollard, and was educated at the Avondale Public School and King's College. Before the war he followed farming pursuits.

The death occured at Stirling, on the 2nd instant, of a well known and respected resident of the district, in the person of Mrs Margaret Bryce, at the age of 70 years. The late Mrs Bryce, who was born in Scotland, came to New Zealand in the "Jura" 1848, and settled in the Milton district. Sebsequently, on the death of her husband, Mrs Bryce removed to Stirling where she resided up to the time of her death. The people of Stirling district, will remember her, by her kindly unselfish nature and the interest she took in nursing. Mrs Bryce had 5 of a family, 2 of whom are left to mourn their loss. One son, Captain James Bryce, made the supreme sacrifice in the great war.

The death occurred at Ahiaruhe on Monday of Mr H R Bunny, and old Wairarapa settler. Deceased who was 74 years of age, came to New Zealand from England in 1853 and settled in the Wairarapa in 1860, purchasing a farm at Ahiaruhe. He was connected with various local bodies, including the Wairarapa South County Council, Taratahi-Carterton Road Board, Wairarapa P and A Society and Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club. He leaves a widow and family of five.
