BOYD.
J J Boyd's Zoo.
Mr Boyds Zoo was an interesting adjunct to Haywoods Tea Garden, Aramoho. The zoo was a popular establishment containing lions, bears, kangaroos, and monkeys. But Mr Boyde had his problems. The roaring of the lions disturbed the nightly peace of the local residents and caused a spate of letters to the Newspapers. As cages grew older, maintenance became a problem. Animals occasionally escaped and startled people. So Mr Boyd moved his zoo, lock stock and barboon, to Onehunga where is was successfully re-established. But it was not long before the residents of Onehunga were being disturbed by the lions and letters began appearing in the papers again. This time Mr Boyd gave up and disbanded the zoo permanently.

BOYD'S ZOO.
Leader 31 May 1995.
Aucklands first Zoo will be remembered at a ceremony in Onehunga tomorrow. John James Boyd later to become Onehunga Mayor, opened his Zoo in 1912. From a Zoo in Hamilton he imported a Lion and Lioness, Tigress a pair of Bears and a pair of Black Buck Antelopes. There were also 4 Macaws and 2 vultures and 2 demoisell Cranes. Crowds flocked to see the animals but complaints about the noise and smell, ment a continuing battle with the Onehunga Borough Council. Derek Wood History of the Auckland Zoo " Tiger by the Tail" reports that the Zoo owner resolved to take over the Council, whose opinions he could not shift. He was elected Mayor in 1917. But lost his battle to keep the Zoo open. Most of his animals were bought by the Auckland City Council for a Municipal Zoo at Western Springs. Shortly before the Zoo closed in 1922, a lion escaped, ran down Symonds St into Trafalgar St and then into Queen street in Onehunga, it was recaptured there by Mr Boyds son, but not before members of the public received the fright of their lives. A sign recounting the story of Boyds Zoo will be unveiled by members of the Maungakiekie Community Board tomorrow, 1.30pm at Manukau Intermediate School.
