ADAMS.
Funeral Notice. Herald, 6th February 1897.
Mrs Adams, died 14th February 1897, wife of William Adams. No buriel info.

ADAMS John J

Settlers who came to Taieri Beach by sea had varied experiences. The Adams Family in 1861 took Possession of 7 and 8 block 25, Clarendon SD; part of the farm later occupied by Thomas Hughan and later Robert Joseph. When the family left Dunedin there had been very heavy rain. Mr Adams took 1 cartload of their possessions to the boat safely, crossing the flooded Leith. Just after the wnd load reached the other side, the street bridge collapsed into the stream, in Albany Street the water was up to the cart axle and through the flood Mrs Adams and the family had to trudge. The boat sailed round to Taireri Mouth, but had to put back because the bar was bad. The next day she tried again. When she appeared in the Bay the ploughman employed on the farm yoked the bullocks into the sledge to go down to the mouth to meet the family, as the boat neared the bar Mr W J Dyer who kept the Store and the punt at Taierei ferry, and new the bar well, climed into the rigging to direct the Skipper. A sudden huge roller struck the boat and threw her so on her beem ends that Mr Dyer clinging to the rigging, had his coat tails soaked in the sea. Fortunately she righted herself before the following wave caught her and flung her clear across the bar into smooth water inside the mouth; and ( said John Adams, as a old man speaking of it at the end of his days) "it was one of the larger boats trading into Taireri at the time. One can imagine how glad Mrs Adams must of been to reach her new home at the end of such a journey. Mr Adams who had come to Dunedin by the ship "Blundell' in 1848 was a Tailor but found no chance of making a living at that trade. He first bought a boat and rowed trips to and fro about the harbour to bring firewood to the small early Dunedin. With young John, his son, he had a contract to clear bush near Clyde and St David Streets to allow of new streets being formed. The family then went to farm at Taierei Beach. Father and son tried their luck at Gariels Gully, but like so many failed to make any fortune so went back to the farm. In 1862 young John started on his own account for the Waitahuna diggings, taking with him a bullock drawn sledge on wich he carted firewood to the camps, selling it at 4/- a bundle, till his father sent for him to come home to do the ploughing. That work being finished young John and his brother Robert Noble Adams, went to Tuapeka diggings, setting up as Carriers with a cart and bullocks. In 1864 the family left the farm for Dunedin, selling to Hughans. Young John made a name for himself eventually as one of Dunedins best known Solicitors, and was admitted to the Bar in 1874, he continued his practice alone untill 1884 when he took into partnership his younger brother A.S. Adams, the firm then being known as Adams Brothers. He died in 1936 , at the age of 92, an outstanding example of a man who rose from labouring to professional status by his own exertions. He was too old to have been a scholar at Taierei Beach, though the younger Robert Noble, Rebecca and David were probably among the 1st pupils in 1862. Robert Noble Adams called the meeting that originated the Otago Early Settlers Associated in March 1898 and a question from a poem written by him is the motto of the association: "Re animate Otagos pioneers to fame undying through the dying years" End.
