He embarked at Auckland 4 Feb 1916 and spent almost three years on the Western Front where he was killed in the Battle of the Sambre, the last great action of the War which freed the people of Quesnoy one week before Armistice.

The deceased who was 78 years of age, had resided in Wanganui over half a century, during which time he carried on business as a builder and contractor. He was one of the oldest members of St Pauls congregation, and for many years was a member of the board of management.
