ABBOT. Settlers of Opotiki Three brothers arrived in Opotiki in 1875 from Dundee, Scotland. They were Charles Scott Abbot, who was accompanied by his wife Emma. Robert Thompson Abbot and Thomas Alexander Abbot, and two sisters were Jane Hill Abbot and Mary Scott Abbot, Mary married another member of a pioneering family, Charles Connelly in 1879. Jane Hill the eldest of the family, never married. Charles Abbot had previously visited New Zealand, as a ships carpenter and his first job on arrival in Opotiki, was to build a ketch named Opotiki for the MP for the district, Mr W Kelly. Mr and Mrs Abbot purchased two 10 acre blocks on either side of the western end of Bridge Street and built their home. Apart from his building activities, which included bridges and wharves. Mr Abbot was the first to grow maize on a commercial basis. The first crop of 125 acres yielded a harvest of 15,600 bushells. Mr Abbots last building contract was the construction of the causeway for the Kutarere Wharf in the early 1920s. He died in 1927 at the age of 80. Three months after her husbands death Mrs Abbot officially opened the present Waioeka Bridge. She died in 1938 aged 89 years. (There is much more on this family, contact me for details).

The death occurred on Sunday, in a Private Nursing Home, of Mr Laurie Abrahams of Auckland. The late Mr Abrahams arrived from London 10 years ago, and entered the service of Messrs Hancock and Company. He was unmarried and was 35 years of age. While in Auckland Mr Abrahams became very popular as an amateur entertainer and was a valuable member of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society. He played leading parts in performances produced by that body. He always gave his services freely and willingly in the cause of charity and these will be greatly missed. No other details.

Major Leo G D Acland, of Christchurch, a well known New Zealand sportsman, has not been wounded as was officially stated in the hospital list published yesterday, but was invalided to England from France because the stump of his arm, which he lost while tiger hunting in India, was giving him trouble. An operation was performed on the nerves and according to the message received, he is making satisfactory progress.

A verdict of death from acute heart failure, during anaesthesia and during a necessary operation for toxic goitre, was returned by the Coroner at Napier at a inquest into the death of Mrs Frances Adams, the Coroner added that the anaesthetic was properly administered and the heart was in a toxic condition, due to goitre. The medical evidence showed that the goitre had to be removed to allow the woman to live. No other details.

ADDIS. Settlers of Opotiki One of the early Blacksmiths in Opotiki was William John Addis, who established his business in 1886 after he left his trade in Auckland. He also had a Wheelwrights shop, which was run by Mr R Jefferies. Mr Addis's father arrived in New Zealand in 1860 and fought at Gate Pa as a Colour Sergeant Major, after the war he married and settled in Tauranga. Mr William Addis married Miss Jessie Foxcroft and their 7 children were all born in Opotiki. Four of the sons, one of whom was killed, all served in WW1. No other details.

He was a School Teacher and at the time of enlistment had the charge of Ranginui and Tokanui schools. Lieut Col Robert Candlish Allen, reported wounded, is well known in the Piako district, where he was engaged in farming at Annandale before he left NZ. He went into camp in September 1915 with the rank of Major. He took a keen interest in the territorial movement and he was a major in the 6th, Hauraki, Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the field and was appointed to the command of a battalion in February last. He was well known as a successful and enterprising farmer and a prominent member of the Farmers Union. No other details.

An inquest was held yesterday at the Whau Lunatic Asylum, Auckland, before Doctor Goldsbro, Coroner, and a jury of 12, on the body of a patient named John Anderson, aged 38 years, who died on the 24th instant. The evidence of the resident Surgeon, and the Warder who attended the deceased , was taken and it was elicited that he was admitted to the Asylum on the 11th June 1873, by order of the Bench of Magistates at the Thames. He enjoyed good health until the day before his death. On the 24th instant he had a opopletic fit, from the effects of which he never recovered. His wife remains at the Thames.
