Wish we'd given odds on this thing. For the first nine months of 1939, this page reported 44 marriages. In the first nine months of 1940, the Year of the Draft Law, the number dropped - yes, that's right, dropped to an even 40. June, 1940, ran true to form by leading the other months with nine knot-tyings. In fact, June, July, August and September of this year reports eight more marriages than the same period in 1939. The more statistics we juggle, the more mixed up we get, so you take it from here: January - 1939, 6, 1940, 4; February, 2, 1; March, 5, 4; April, 6, 1; May, 5, 2; June, 7, 9; July, 4, 6; August, 2, 8; September, 7, 5. Add Collegians - Lee CULP, son of Mr and Mrs George CULP, is a senior at the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio. Which means another June degree from Wetzel County. Mary Martha BRIDGEMAN, daughter of Dr and Mrs George, will soon enroll at Bliss Business College at Columbus, Ohio. Brother, Jack, another cap-and-gowner, is at Ohio U. at Athens. Marcella HERRICK, daughter of the Leos, writes that she is to interview Pat O'BRIEN of the flickers this wek. Pat-or Mr. O'BRIEN- is at Notre Dame for the premier of "Knute Rockne - All American" in which he plays the title role. Marcella's school, St. Marys College, is just across the way, and the big Irishman, along with some other luminaries, is coming over for lunch. ROCKNE'S daughter, Jean, is also a St. Marys student. Speaking of the picture, Joe WELLS was full of raves for it. He and Jack GANDOUR attended a private, advance showing at the Capitol theatre at Wheeling Tuesday night - exclusive to members of the Notre Dame Club and their friends. What Joe liked best was being able to pick out any seat he wanted in the theatre. Sororities at West Virginia University made public their list of pledges for the 1940 fall rushing season last weekend. A familiar name was Joan BARR, who pledged Phi Mu, and was subsequently entertained, along with her sister pledges, at the home of an active ?at ARTHURDALE. John PYLE of Sistersville and Betty ROLAND of Clarksburg were both members of the pledge group entertained at dinner at the Morgantown Country Club last Friday night, when Alpha Xi Delta sorority played hostess to the neophytes. Big things happened last week to the Walter SMITTLES of Paden City. On Thursday, they acquired a granddaughter and on Friday a son-in-law. (some of article cut off) to Garth POE, son of Mr and Mrs Cleve on Friday. It's pretty soft for Garth. When Barbara Kay celebrates her birthday, he'll have 24 hours notice to hunt anniversary presents. This week's issue of the Columbus (Ohio) Star carried a full length picture of Mary ESCHENBRENNER, daughter of Mr and Mrs Hector, as she appeared in a style show held by the Union Company of Columbus at the Scioto Country Club. Mary wore a deb style dinner dress of taffeta, with a tight-fitting embroidered jacket- and was a knockout, no less. The E's used to live in New Martinsville, and Mary's a niece of Mrs. Russell HUTCHINSON and Mrs. George MALFREGEOT. This mousetrap-building business must be all right. A fellow columnist, chattering about familiar faces at the W. V. U. Westminster game at Morgantown Saturday, noted "blond Sam McELDOWNEY of New Martinsville, whose legal phrasing helped free Violet LONG in the sensational Wetzel County trial." Take a bow, Sam'l. ================= END of October 4, 1940 Wetzel Democrat copied ================![]()
