Educating yourself on DNA basics and the fundamentals of genetic genealogy are good critical steps in your DNA solutions journey. Choosing the right company is a key personal decision you will make; after all, your DNA is a part of you! Ask these questions when evaluating who you want to have your DNA. Genetic Genealogy, while a powerful tool, is not a cure-all for genealogical woes. Current applications of genetic genealogy beyond the nuclear family are limited to direct paternal or direct maternal lines. In most cases a Y chromosome or mtDNA test can tell you if you are or are not related to someone, and can give an estimate of when your two lineages coalesce. Genetic data, however, will not reveal the exact generation of a common ancestor nor reveal who the common ancestor is. When genetic testing is used to verify genealogy, a mathematical equation is used to calculate the approximate distance in time to the most recent common ancestor.

Which Y Chromosome Test Should I choose ?
Y DNA 18--Family Tree Pruner TM(18 markers). This test provides a taste of how genetics can enhance traditional genealogical methods. Its primary purpose is to determine if branches can be eliminated from your family tree. If you have a common surname or are simply trying to find out if you are related to a specific group, choose this test.

Y DNA 26--Family Line Verifier TM(26 markers). This test is best for those whose primary objective is to determine relatedness to a specific individual(s) or family line(s).If you are just getting started using genetic testing in your family research and want a choice that can eliminate relationships and lend substantial support for your genealogical conclusions, choose this test. This test improves your time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor by 3 generations.

Y DNA 43--Lineage Establisher TM (43 markers). This test further defines family clusterings within your group. It is most useful when you have specific hypotheses, or are trying to distinguish lineages within your family group. If you want a high resolution test to improve the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) probability between genetic cousins and common ancestor(s), choose this test. The time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor is improved by 2 generations over the Y DNA 26.
