Information related to the Obituary of
Emely Dellenbach Switzer
---------------

Information given to me by Betty B.
I had written her about an obituary of Emily Switzer she'd found in the contents
of some diaries she owned.
I had also asked her if there were any other Swisher's mentioned in the diaries.

The best description I can give of what she sent back to me is to quote from
her letter dated 16, November, 1999.
Also included a little of the Getz/Gates history .
============================================
From letter:

The three diaries I have are three that Peter Gates kept when he was a
traveling preacher for the Evangelical Association. He traveled on
horse-back, on foot, and I am sure by buggy owned by someone else, and
sometimes was fortunate to travel better than that, although in these
journals he does not mention what.
How he traveled on the "turnpike", I am not sure.

Peter was the brother of my great-grandfather, John. John and Peter
both were sons of Adam Getz/Gates, and both John and Peter and most of
his brothers and sisters, if not all of them, were born in Ross County,
Ohio.

I have looked through the three diaries and found only one reference to
a John Swisher to whom Peter preached when he was traveling the Sandusky Circuit
in 1833 - 1834. This circuit included six counties in the state of Ohio:
Marion, Richland, Crawford, Seneca, "Hancock", and Sandusky.
Peter lists the name of John Swisher, and then in another place the name
John Swisher followed what looks to be "in S. Sandusky".
I guess these to be the same person. Other names are listed, also.

This obituary was on a seperate sheet of paper put inside the front cover
of one of the diaries along with other certificates. This obituary was
not inside the 1833 diary, which is the date Peter traveled this circuit the
first time.
This obituary was inside the diary from 1854 to 1856. Peter also preached
those years, and kept this journal then.
Another diary is from 1846 to 1850. These three diaries in my possession
have hard covers, very similar in appearance, with a blotched pattern in
greenish-brown to brown. Peter filled each page so that there are no
margins--he wrote on every inch of each page. The diaries have over 120 pages
of his writings. The obituary was loose, not bound with the diary pages.
There is no other information in these diaries about the Swisher-Switzer
 families that I could locate.. . .

Henry Sweitzer [ Ferry landing ]

Taken from: History of Washington County, Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches and many of its Pioneers and Prominent Men. Edited by Boyd Crumrine PHILADELPHIA: L.H. Everts & Co. 1882 Press of J. B. Lippincott & Co. Philadelphia Pg 638 --------------------------------------------- The first ferries on the Monongahela River were authorized by the Virginia courts Feb. 23, 1775, then in session at Fort Dunmore (now Pittsburgh). On that day Jacob BAUSMAN was licensed to keep a ferry from his house on the south side of the Monongahela River to Fort Dunmore. Michael CRESAP was also licensed the same day "to keep a ferry on Monongahela River at Redstone Old Fort to the land of Indian Peter [now West Brownsville], and that he provide a boat." CRESAP died in the fall of that year. It is not known by whom the ferry was continued. The lands on the east side of the river came into possession of Thomas BROWN, and in 1784 the lands on the west side were purchased by Neal GILLESPIE. In the minutes of the December sessions of Fayette County Court for 1788 is found a report of certain persons appointed to view "the road from Friends' Meeting-House to the ferry at the fort," meaning Gillespie's ferry at Redstone Old Fort, or Brownsville. The landing-place of the ferry in Brownsville is in front of the residence of Henry SWEITZER (now the United States Hotel), and in West Brownsville directly opposite. The old road that led back into the country from the ferry is now unused, but may be seen winding along the bank of the little stream that comes in at that place. This ferry continued making its landings at this point until about 1820, when the National road was opened to the Monongahela River, and the ferry landing was moved up to the point near where the great highway struck the river at Bridgeport. It was there continued until the bridge across the river was completed...........
