Also personally appeared John Switzer and Eliza Switzer residing at No -------, in the town of Bradford , the County of Steuben, and in the State of New York, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say: They were present and saw Sarah Switzer , the claimant, sign her name (or make her mark) to acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be, and she has not remarried since the death of her husband, but remains his widow; and at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States did she, or her said husband, adhere to the cause of the enemies of the Government, or give them aid or comfort, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. a Court of Record in and for the County and State aforesaid, Sarah Switzer,
aged eighty six years, a resident of the town of Bradford County of
Steuben , State of New York, who, being duly sworn according to law,
declares that she is the widow of John Switzer, who served the full period of
sixty days in the (1) Military service of the United States in the War of 1812,
and who was the identical John Switzer who (2) was drafted in Captain James
Sandfords Company, - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Regiment, - - - - - - - - - - -

Memorandum of Marriages by Henry Switzer J. P. of the town of Jersey in the
County of Steuben June 13th 1814 this day maried John Switzer to Sarah
Switzer, widow.
John Switzer on the thirteenth day of June - - - - - -, A.D. 18 14,
by Henry Switzer , at the town of Jersey, there being no legal barrier to
such marriage; that her said husband died at Bradford in said County,on
the eighteenth day of December, 18 60, and that she has not remarried since
his death; that at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of
the United States did she or her said husband adhere to the cause of the
enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort, or exercised the
functions of any office whatever under any authority, or pretended authority, in
hostility to the United States; that she will support the Constitution of the
United States; that she is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act;
that she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension
rolls of the United States, under the provisions of the act approved February 14,
1871, and hereby constitutes and appoints, with full power of substitution and
revocation,

her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim, and obtain the pension
certificate that may be issued; that her post office is at Bradford, County
of Steuben, State of New York ; that her domicile or place of abode is
with Eliza Switzer and that the annexed copy of a record of her is a true
copy of the original record in all respect.

resident of the town of Bradford in the County of Steiben and State of New York
and that he is of the age of sixty years that he was well acquainted with
Sarah Switzer who is an applicant for a pension as widow of John Switzer for
services of her husband rendered as a soldier in the War of 1812 and that he has
known the said Sarah Switzer and John Switzer for fifty years and that they
lived during all that time as husband and wife and he believes they were
such he never heard it disputed he further says that he has examined the
record of the marriage of the said John and Sarah Switzer of which record the
following is a true Copy: Memorandum of Marriage by Henry Switzer, J.P. of
the town of Jersey in the County of Steuben June 13th 1814 this day
married John Switzer to Sarah Switzer widow. He further says that he
believes that the above record is in all

respects true as he was well acquainted with the hand writing of Henry
Switzer the person who the record purports to have married them the said John and
Sarah and the said record is in the hand w riting of the said Henry Switzer and he
further says that the said John Switzer is dead that he died at the town of
Bradford in the month of December in the year 1860 he knows the said John
Switzer is dead from the fact he attended his funeral he further says that the
said Henry Switzer is dead and that he does not know of any person living who was
present at the marriage of the said John and Sarah he further says that he has
no interest in this claim.

Scott who being duly Sworn according law says he is of the age of 67 years that
he is a resident of the town of Bradford in the County Steuben and state of New
York has lived where he now lives for 66 years that he was well acquainted with
Sarah Switzer widow of John Switzer that he has lived near the said John
Switzer and Sarah for more than 45 years and that they lived together during that
time as husband and wife and he believes they were lawfully Married he never
heard it disputed and he further that he remembers when it was reported that they
were married more than fifty years ago but he does not remember the date he
further says that the said John Switzer is dead that he attended his funeral that
he has been dead for several years but he does not recollect the precise date he
further says- says- that he remembers the time that the said John Switzer went
into the military service of United States in the War of 1812 he further says
that he has examined the record of the Marriage

of the said John Switzer and Sarah purporting to be made by Henry Switzer a
Justice of the Peace that the said Henry Switzer was a Justice of the Peace and he
believes the hand writing of the record of Marriage to be said Henry

War {6 page handwritten application for pension for participation in the Revolutionary War of 1776} Pg 1 State of Virginia Lewis County Courthous Personally appeared before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace in and for the Said County of Lewis on this 23 day of Sept 1833 George Richards a resident of the County of Lewis and State of Virginia and {74?} years who being first duly Sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following decleration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed Jun 7, 1832. That he entered the Service of the United States under the following named officers and Served as here in Stated. That in the year 1780 on the -2- day of March in the county of Monongalia and the State of Virginia he volunteered for nine months as an indian Spy and was plased under the Command of Capt Joseph Gregory. Ensign John Tommis? other officers names not recollected and was Stationed at powers fort on Simpsons Creek in the county and State aforesaid. Capt. Gregory commanded a Company of Indian Spys and affiant was engaged in Spying the County from Said fort to the River Ohio over this tower. The indians come in to the country and killed a man by the name of Phillip Davy and stoled horse belonging William Rogers - affiant served out the tower for which he Volunteered during which time he acted as orderly Sargeant to which office he was promoted when he first entered the Service as an indian Spy - under the Command of Capt Gregory affiant was discharged some time in the month of december by his Said Capt Gregory in the year 1780 having Service nine months as an indian Spy as an orderly Sergant- again in the Pg2 year of 1781 in march the 8th in the county of "M"onongalia and the State of Virginia affiant Volunteered and was plased under the Command of the Same officers as in his first tower to wit Capt Josep Gregory ensign John Tommis affiant was again promoted to the office of - orderly Sargeant and was Stationed at Powers fort of Simpsons Creek in the county and State aforesaid and was engaged as aforesaid in Spying and watching the enemy {?}prevent there commiting depredations on the then thin Settled country of north western Virginia affiant was engaged in the above named Service untill some time in the month of November 1781 at which time affiant was discharged by his Said Capt Joseph Gregory having Served nine months as an indian Spy during which time affiant acted in the capasity of an order Sargeant and performed all the dutys belonging to said office again in the year 1782 in the month of Aprill he think the 8th day as volunteer in the County of Monongalia and State of Virginia and was marched from Simpsons Creek to Arnolds fort on the west fork River in the county and State aforesaid affiant was marched under the command of Ensign John Tommis from Simpsons Creek to Arnolds and when he arrived there he was plased under the Command of Capt William Lowther, George Jackson, Lieutenant John Tommis ensign the distance from Simpsons Creek to Arnolds affiant thinks is about 18 miles the country from one fort to another was a wilderness affiant was engaged during this tower of Service as in his first and Second under the command of Capt Josep Gregory in Spying the country from "Said fort to the river ohio over the Pg 3 Same Country as mentioned in his first and Second tower under the Command of Capt Joseph Gregory during his tower as in affiants first and Second he was an orderly Sargeant and Continued to act and performed the dutys belonging Said office until some time in the month of November 1782 at which time the affiant was discharged by his Said Capt William Lowther having Served Eight months as an indian spy in the active capasity of an orderly Sargeant the following are the occurences which took place during affiants Several towers of Service in his first Vary little took place of which affiant hase any distinct recollection - during his -2nd- tower under Capt Gregory the indians come into the neighbourhood of Simpsons and killed Capt John Tommis, his wife and To of his children and took one p{?} during his third tower the indians come into the neighbourhood of Arnolds fort, on the west fork river when affiant was Stationed and killed {Paul/Dave?} and Arnold Richards to the Several interogatories prescribed by the War department the Justice proseded- to pronounce to which affiant answers as follows to the first he answers and says. So 1- I was Borned in the county of Rockingham State of Virginia in the year 1759- 2- I have no Record of my age. I have the recollection of my parents who informed me the year I was Borned in- 3- When called in to Service I was living in the county of Monongalia State of Virginia. I have never lived out of the State of Virginia since the Revolutionary War. I have lived in the county of Harrison and the county of Wood and Lewis County where I now reside in the State of Virginia 4) all my towers of Service I volunteered Pg 4 5- during my first tower I became acquainted with Capt Booth who commanded a company of indian Spys as I was informed I also become acquainted with Col. Benjamin Wilson and Capt Trimble who came from Augusta County my servis being that of an indian Spy and confined to the north western part of Virginia I never had an opportunity to become acquainted with any of regular officers. I was regularly discharged by my {?} Capt. - under whom I served but they are lost or mislayed I have no documentary evidence of my service and know of no one by whom I can prove my Service but are known to and acquainted with William L Mitchell and John Cain who can testify to my character my age - to their beliefs of my having bin a Soldier of the Revolutionary War I hereby relinquish every claim what ever to a pention or anuity except the presant and declares that his name is not on the pention Roll of the agency of any State. The within named John Switzer was a Drummer in my Company in the late war was with me at Fort George U.C. and was by order of the surgeon sent to the hospital of Lewis Town from what cause I do not recollect, but think it was very probable on account of the injury received by him in disembarking the artillery on landing at the commencement of the engagement and which he states is the cause of his present lameness. I was informed that he was removed from Lewistown to the hospital at Greenbush from where he was discharged. N. Towson P.M.G.

Fort M Henry 22d Sept 1819 I certifye to whome it may concearn that I have examined John Switzer , Said to have been Drum major in Capt. Towson's Co 2d Regiment of Artillery, who received a wound in the knee at the Battle of Fort George, and that my opinion is, that he is from said wound disqualified from earning a livelyhood -------------at least two thirds W. Cook, of lawfull age who after being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he well knows John Switzer (now present) to have been a regular enlisting soldier during the late War, that he knows that he was a Drummer in the 14th Regiment United States Infantry, that he and said Switzer were both attatched to the same Regiment and were together and took an active part in the affair or battle of Fort George on the 27th day of May 1813 at which place and during said affair that the said John Switzer was wounded in his knee, owing to the Regiment having to pass over a number of Barrells which had been previously placed as a debutment preventative to the pasage of our troops - and that he saw said Switzer directly affter the affair and saw his knee which was then and thereby broke - John H. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: (10) he was bout 5 ft 10 inches high, blue eyes, black hair, sandy beard. She further states that she was married to the said Jacob M. Swisher, at the city (or town) of _________, in the county of Marion County, and in the State of Va now W Va, on the 16th day of January A.D. 1807 by one (11) Isaah Hawkins, who was a (12) Minister; and that her name before her said marriage was Margaret Miller, and that she has not remarried since the death of said Jacob M. Swisher; and she further states that (13) said Jacob M. Swisher was previously married to Catherine Bonar {?} {?} about the year 1852 that the claimant was previously married to Robert Miller about the year 18-- and that her husband (14) Jacob M. Swisher, died at Marion County, in the State of West Virginia, on the 9th day of December A.D. 1874; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: (15) Marion County West Virginia. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740, inclusive, Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9, 1878, and hereby appoints, with full powers of substitution and revocation, R. W. WALKER, OF WASHINGTON, D.C. her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her claim. And she further declares that she has heretofore made no application for (16)either pension or bounty, but her said Husband Jacob M.
