CARL WILKENING (1881)

Carl Wilkening is the owner of 280 acres of Yellow Medicine county land,
situated on the west half of section 14, Posen township.  He has been a
resident of the county over thirty years.  Mr. Wilkening was born in
Hanover, Germany, February 12, 1854.  Soon after becoming of age he came to
the United States, first locating in Nicollet county, Minnesota, where for
five years he was engaged in railroad work.  In 1881 he came to Yellow
Medicine county and secured most of his present farm at that time.  It was
then wild prairie land, and every item of improvement has been added by the
present owner.  In addition to raising a large amount of grain each year,
Mr. Wilkening is quite heavily interested in the breeding of Percheron
horses.

Mr. Wilkening is a stockholder of the Farmers Elevator and Trading Company
of Wood Lake.  He was for two years a director of school district No. 59.
He is a member of the German Lutheran church.

Mrs. Wilkening, who was Louise Pymhof, is also a native of Hanover, Germany,
where she was born June 25, 1856.  She came to the United States with her
husband.  They have ten children, born as follows:  Carl, June 2, 1877;
Emma, March 18, 1879; Anna, June 24, 1881; Martha, November 21, 1883;
Sophia, March 13, 1885; Matilda, February 23, 1889; William, November 25,
1891; Lillian, February 22, 1893; Walter, October 30, 1895; and Lizzie,
February 5, 1897.

Mr. Wilkening's parents are both deceased, the mother having died in the old
country and the father during his first year in the United States.
