JOHN ODEGAARD (1881)

John Odegaard, deceased, was for many years one of the substantial farmers
of Sioux Agency township and a man held in esteem by his neighbors.  He was
a native Minnesotan, having been born in Goodhue county in November 1862.

When nineteen years of age, in 1881, John Odegaard accompanied his parents
to Yellow Medicine county, and the family home was established in Sioux
Agency township.  For four years he resided with his parents and then set
out in life for himself.  It was in 1885 that he bought a quarter section
farm on section 6, Sioux Agency, the farm upon which his widow and children
now reside.  The farm was then raw prairie land, far different from the
improved place of today.  On that place he resided until his death on
December 9, 1902.  At the time of his death Mr. Odegaard was treasurer of
school district No. 8 and had been for several years.

John Odegaard was married in the township in which he lived so many years on
November 27, 1884.  His bride was Turi Johnson, a daughter of Halvor and
Turi Johnson, who are now deceased.  She was born in Fillmore county,
Minnesota, March 1, 1862, and came to Yellow Medicine county with her
parents in 1868.  They were among the earliest settlers of Sioux Agency
township and of the county.

To Mr. and Mrs. Odegaard were born four children, as follows:  Ole
Waugelsteen, who has charge of the home place and who was born August 31,
1885; Anna Amelia (Mrs. T. M. Anderson), of Willmar, Minnesota, born July 6,
1888; Turi Matilda, born November 13, 1890; and Halvor Theodore, born
October 16, 1892.
