SYLFEST AABERG (1872)

Sylfest Aaberg is of Norwegian parentage, being a son of Ole H. and Anna
(Orvold) Oberg, and was born in Norway on July 4, 1865.

At the age of seven years he came with his parents to the United States,
settling in Sandnes township in 1872.  His early education was secured in
the schools of districts No. 1 and 9, and later he finished the eighth grade
in the public school of Granite Falls.  In 1884 he began a two year
preparatory course in Luther College, at Decorah, Iowa.  After finishing
that course he taught two years in his home district, No. 9.  In 1886 Mr.
Aaberg commenced a full normal course at the Willmar Institute, finishing
the same in 1890.  For seventeen years thereafter he was engaged in
teaching, being principal of the Hanley Falls school two years; Cottonwood,
one year; Echo, two years; Hazel Run, five years; and teaching several years
in the country.

In 1901 Mr. Aaberg engaged in the general merchandise business at Hanley
Falls, an enterprise which he continued eleven years.  He sold out and
retired in 1912, moving to his brother's farm, the old family homestead.

Mr. Aaberg was  married December 26, 1906, to Ella Stevens, who was born in
Sandnes township September 18, 1875.

During the period of his residence in Hanley Falls Mr. Aaberg filled many
local offices.  He was recorder, councilman and justice of the peace at
various times, and he served ten years as clerk of the Board of Education.
For several years he was treasurer of the Lutheran church society.
