Lewis (Center) Cemetery

Lewis, Essex County, New York

INTRODUCTION

There are three cemeteries in the Town of Lewis: Lewis (Center) Cemetery, Deerhead Cemetery and Roscoe Cemetery. The information herein is from the Lewis (Center) Cemetery.

The Lewis Cemetery is on land owned by the First Congregational Church of Lewis and is located to the west of the Church building in the Town of Lewis, NY. Although the land belongs to the First Congregational Church of Lewis, it is overseen by the Lewis Cemetery Association, along with the other two Cemeteries.

Because of my interest in genealogy, I first "mapped" the Lewis Cemetery in 1976 - 1977, documenting the information found on the monuments and markers. This information is now updated by me thirty years later. This was done by taking the original information, inputting it into the computer, then comparing the typed information with what is presently found on the monuments and markers. Corrections have been made and new information added at this time. It might be noted that the information on the monuments may not be correct, but is listed as found by the writer.

The layout of the Lewis Cemetery divides it into Blocks for ease of locating monuments and markers. Page numbers found in each Block designate the start and end of each Block as the information is recorded row by row. Note: Page numbers may not show up on rootsweb.com.

A final alphabetical index is included for reference and to assist in locating individual monuments and markers. Maiden names have also been listed in the Index to assist a researcher in locating a family name.

Other information includes:
Vet.   For Veterans known to the American Legion or with service inscriptions on stones
LVFD   For individuals who have belonged to the Lewis Volunteer Fire Department
F&AM   When a Free & Accepted Mason insignia is noted on a monument
OES When an Order of the Eastern Star insignia is noted on a monument

Though I have proof-read the information herein, I apologize for any typographical errors that I might have made. For any questions, feel free to wander through this historical cemetery and locate the monument or marker that may give you the answer.
