98 year old has booth at bazaar

St. Michael's 15th Christmas bazaar proudly recognizes Mary VanderMortel for the 30 years Mary has been knitting. Mrs. VandeMortel began donating knitted mittens in 1962 when St. Michael's Church established its first Christmas bazaar. In years to come Mary's amount of donated mittens became so great that she branched off and had her own booth named "Mary's Mitten Corner''. Mary begins knitting immediately following the bazaar and continues through the two years until the next bazaar. For St. Michael's 1990 bazaar and this year's bazaar on December 5, Mary has renamed her booth "Mary's Knitting". She has expanded her projects to include mittens, scarves, socks and "Barbie" doll clothes.

Originally born in Belgium and raised in Holland, Mary and her sisters learned how to knit from the nuns who taught them school. In 1910, Mary, at the age of 16, came to America and has resided in Newark for 88 years.

On December 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., we invite you to come share in our celebration and visit Mary at St. Michael's Bazaar 1992: "A Christmas Gathering".
