Descendants of William Freeland Sr. Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM FREELAND1 SR. He married MARY MCCALL1 December 12, 1790 in Glasgow, Scotland2. Notes for WILLIAM FREELAND SR.:
Information was obtained from registers of Glasgow parish of Gorbals, Scotland. Also from; Scots Ancestry Society 20 York Place Edinburgh EH133P Scotland. Dr.Moira Simmons director--Feb. 15, 1979. Twins were recorded born in 1792--William and Catharine, April 20, 1792 FREELAND Arms Argent, a chevron ermines between three mullets gules. Crest A leopard passant argent pellet tee. Motto Libera terra liberque animus. Authority Burke's "General Armory"", 1878 edition, page 377 Tinctures as shown by description; The shield is of silver. The chevron is of ermines (black with white ermine spots). The mullets (stars) are of red. The leopard is of silver with discs of black. The mantle and wreath are of black and silver. Notes The main line of this family possessed Gretham, in Hampshire, a branch owning Oaklands, in Sussex. A new and modern arms was granted to the branch in Manchester, Yorkshire, and Dunbartonshire. In 1790 Gorbals was a country village in Lanarkshire county. Indeed some of its thatched cottages survived into the early 1900`s. It had its quota of linen weavers. At that time cotton was beginning to take the place of linen. William Freeland would serve his time at weaving linen, but would change over to cotton because the wages were higher. This is clear from the chapters on the cotton and linen industries in Pratt Insh`s Scotland and the Modern World. It is possible that his son moved to Carluke to work as a weaver, then became Sheriff Officer. Perhaps he combined that job with weaving. Registration of births, deaths, and marriages did not start till 1855. That is why it is so difficult to trace people before that. Church registers are by no means complete. In 1790 all the land to the west and north of what is now Union Street was farmland. There is no problem about cow feeders in Glasgow parish. There must have been a large settlement of Scots in Wisconsin, as most of the marriages were to Scottish partners, There is now a big mixture of names--English, Irish and Continental. . Snypes farm is still there at the foot of Neilston Pad.

He came to the U.S. in 1845. He was a farmer. He was Presbyterian. Alexander (Sandy) Freeland, Sr. Alexander came to the U.S. about 1845, went to the California gold rush, came home to Dekorra, Wisconsin and married Margaret Wilson in 1855. His brother James also went to California but returned to Scotland and died approximately 1851. He had rings made from gold nuggets for his sisters and sisters in law. Jean Gordon 1887-1986 of Uddingston, Scotland had her grandmother's . (Janet Freeland--William's wife.) Alexander built a brick farm home west of Poynette, Wisconsin. The house is still standing (1993) on the south side of Wisconsin Highway CJ about two miles west of Poynette. There were high hills immediately behind the house and barn which were covered with trees. The farm fields were on top of the hill to the south. The boys loved the woods on the hill which was their playground while they grew up. He was a curler and his stone was marble. His children were happy when he spent two weeks at a time at Milwaukee or Madison among other towns curling because he was "cross and made them work." He did not want his children to call him father or dad and that us why he called boy Alexander dad. Ruby Fisk said Alexander Jr. was called dad because Mary Jane found out his name, Alexander, was the same as their father's and so their nicknames, "Dad" , should be the same. One Christmas, it was very cold, his children wanted to go somewhere but Alexander told them it was to cold to take the horses out of the barn. The children then ran out to the barn and took the sleigh bells and ran out to the road. Alexander came out angry looking for the horses and sleigh but could not find any tracks. After he went in, the children again ran with the sleigh bells just to get him angry. Notes for MARGARET WILSON:
She came to the U.S. at age 7. She stepped on a rusty nail--died of tetanus. Marriage Notes for ALEXANDER FREELAND and MARGARET WILSON:
Alexander Freeland and his brother John Freeland left Scotland for Wisconsin in the 1840`s. They et William Wilson (whose sister Margaret later became the wife of Alexander). The three men participated in the Gold Rush in California in 1849-1850. They crossed Indian territory by horseback. John returned to Scotland and died two years later of tuberculosis. Alexander went to Wisconsin where he farmed near Poynette. Alexander and Margaret Wilson Freeland's son Will married Mary Black in 1887. Mary's parents were also Scottish immigrants and resided in Dekorra. Mary and Will homesteaded in South Dakota where he ran a flour mill and farmed. The flour was bolted (ground very fine) and Will found the flour dust caused him to have a type of asthma. Mary was afraid of the Indians in that region (Miller) so with the two children, Marion and Elmer, they moved to Slayton, Minnesota to farm. After several year and two more children--Flora and Margaret--they moved to Villisca, Iowa where Will as a carpenter built homes in that town. William H. Freeland, Jr. was born there. Will, his brothers and sisters attended the Poynette Academy in downtown Poynette. Here they took special classes and perfected their penmanship. It was quite a privilege to be able to do this in those days. Poynette Academy qualified graduates to teach and later became part of Carroll College in Wisconsin.
