Notes for MARY BLACK: Mary Black Freeland was born in Caledonia, Wisconsin, April 19, 1866. She was one of eleven children of Pioneer Scotch parentage. On March 16, she was united in marriage to William H. Freeland of Poynette., Wisconsin. To this union 5 children were born. Mrs. Freeland moved to this vicinity thirty-three year ago from Minnesota where the family had made its home. She then moved with her family to Villisca, IA. Mrs. Freeland was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Villisca and the local Eastern Star. The funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church with the pastor, the Rev. Arthur Mortenson in charge. Singing was by J.H. Todd with Mrs. R.L. Maxey as accompanist. The Eastern Star order conducted the service at the grave and members of this lodge served as pallbearers. Grandmother of Norma Query Frey. Notes for WILLIAM HARVIE FREELAND: Mr. Freeland`s early life was spent as a flour miller in South Dakota and Wisconsin. He was united in marriage to Mary Black at Poynette, Wisconsin, on March 16,1887. He engaged in farming in Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa respectively. Later he moved to Villisca where he resided for twenty-five years. Following the death of his wife he made his home with a son, Dr. E.W. Freeland of Clarinda, Iowa. He had 5 brothers who preceded him in death and left two sisters, Mrs. W.F Kading of Webster, South Dakota, and Mrs. Elizateth Startin of Poynette, Wisconsin, and one brother, Mr. Hugh S. Freeland of Poynette, Wisconsin. As a lad he affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Interment being held at the Villisca Cemetery February 14, 1935. Rev. Arthur Mortenson conducted the funeral at the First Presbyterian Church. The singing was by Mrs. L .W. Scott, accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Maxey. Pallbearers were Frank Query, Ray Mc Coy, Charles Dickinson, Dr. E.W. Freeland Lieut. Wm H Freeland and Max Corwin.
