William Black was born in Cantyre, Argyleshire, Scotland. On May 2, 1854, he married Catherine White at Port Glasgow, Scotland and two days later sailed for America.

William followed the life of a sailor on the briny deep from April 1848 to June 1856, then came to Wisconsin and settled in Caledonia where he has since resided, though he has sailed on the Lakes several seasons since. He has eleven children. He held the offices of Chairman of the town, assessor, and town clerk, and was Justice of the Peace several terms. He is a democrat, owned 170 acres of land. Sailed to India, Australia, around the Horn. along eastern coasts.

Moffat, minister of the Church and Parish of Port Glasgow. Bans posted and read May1, 1854. Marriage certificate is signed by David McBrayne, the sessions clerk.

Sailor Bill Black--man at the wheel--pilot. He worked in meat plant in Milwaukee, WI. Sailed Great Lakes for 2 years. Moved to Black farm in 1885. William Black paid $500 to stay out of army in the Civil War.

Notes for MARY BLACK:

Mary Black Freeland was born in Caledonia, Wisconsin, April 19, 1866. She was one of eleven children of Pioneer Scotch parentage. On March 16, she was united in marriage to William H. Freeland of Poynette., Wisconsin. To this union 5 children were born. Mrs. Freeland moved to this vicinity thirty-three year ago from Minnesota where the family had made its home. She then moved with her family to Villisca, IA. Mrs. Freeland was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Villisca and the local Eastern Star.

The funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church with the pastor, the Rev. Arthur Mortenson in charge. Singing was by J.H. Todd with Mrs. R.L. Maxey as accompanist. The Eastern Star order conducted the service at the grave and members of this lodge served as pallbearers.

Notes for WILLIAM HARVIE FREELAND:

Mr. Freeland`s early life was spent as a flour miller in South Dakota and Wisconsin. He was united in marriage to Mary Black at Poynette, Wisconsin, on March 16,1887. He engaged in farming in Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa respectively. Later he moved to Villisca where he resided for twenty-five years. Following the death of his wife he made his home with a son, Dr. E.W. Freeland of Clarinda, Iowa. He had 5 brothers who preceded him in death and left two sisters, Mrs. W.F Kading of Webster, South Dakota, and Mrs. Elizateth Startin of Poynette, Wisconsin, and one brother, Mr. Hugh S. Freeland of Poynette, Wisconsin. As a lad he affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Interment being held at the Villisca Cemetery February 14, 1935.

Rev. Arthur Mortenson conducted the funeral at the First Presbyterian Church. The singing was by Mrs. L .W. Scott, accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Maxey. Pallbearers were Frank Query, Ray Mc Coy, Charles Dickinson, Dr. E.W. Freeland Lieut. Wm H Freeland and Max Corwin.

Attended City Western Dental College, Kansas City, MO. 1914 started dental practice in Clarinda, IA. Long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Clarinda. He was born in Miller, SD and raised in the Villisca community. He graduated from Villisca High School in 1909.He served for 17 years as dental surgeon at the Mental Health Institute in Clarinda as well as his own practice. He was on the board of trustees at Westminster and served as Sunday school superintendent. He was one of the first scout masters in southwest IA. He was a Mason, OES member and Shriner.

Mrs. Ruth Freeland came to Clarinda in 1915. She was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star and Chapter KH PEO. She was born in Beloit, KS, and attended College of Emporia, Emporia , KA. Ruth died at the age of 86.

She graduated from Villisca High School in l914. On March 11, l917 she was married to Frank Query at the Presbyterian manse in Villisca. They farmed north of Villisca from the time of their marriage until 1940 when they moved to the Bedford-Gravity area where they lived until moving to Villisca in 1971. Mrs. Query was a 64 Year member of the O.E.S. and a 70 year member of the Villisca United Presbyterian Church. She died Tuesday night October 20, 1981. She raised her niece Marcia Freeland Crump and nephew Thomas Freeland.

William Black and Marian Irma Clark Black adopted the four children born to Francis (Frank) Henry and Dorothy Eleanor McNabb of South Bend, IN. Frank and Eleanor died about a year apart in February of 1944 and 1945. The orphaned children were adopted shortly thereafter. They were Paul Henry, Richard Edward, Suzanne Elizabeth and Mary Ellen.
