Frederick Nusbickel Jr. and Anna Maria Kletzing met at Northwester College, in Naperville, Illinois. Anna Kletzing was one of the founders of the Y.W.C.A. While she was at Northwestern College, she was the first president of the Y's first chapter at Naperville, Illinois. (1875-1876)  They were married in 1876 and about to start their married life in Naperville when Fred was summoned home to help with the family hardware business which was being undermined by one of his brothers-in-law. (We wonder, which one?)
The business was expanded to include an apple-drying house. Shipments of dried and fresh apples and other fruits and grains went by the carload to markets in Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and New York.

Frederick and Anna Maria Kletzing Nusbickel

Frederick and his wife Anna lived with his parents until they moved to the new Nusbickel block, built in 1879. Three children were born in the apartment there on the top two floors. The family moved to 65 Broad Street in 1893 which they tore down and in 1901 built the present structure.

The Nusbickel Home at 65 Broad Street, Lyons, NY

The home at 65 Broad Street in Lyons, NY was constructed under the supervision of Frederick. The architect's plans were re-worked to include Fred's own wishes for fine architectural details throughout the home, including ionic porch and interior columns, beaded and egg-and-dart moldings and paneled dadoes. Fred even made three trips to Vermont to get the best granite he could find for the front porch pedestals.
Oakley Van Slyke and Elizabeth Nusbickel were married in this home in 1902, the year after its completion.
